Club Championships

This annual championship was first played in 1927, the year the course was first opened and club established. The trophy is named “The Roberts Championship Cup” after its donor, the clubs first president Mr A J Roberts (Alfred Jebez Roberts). Mr Roberts donated £25 for the purpose of providing a silver cup for perpetual championship competition.

The Cup is inscribed with the winners name and year.

The trophy was referred to in the early years of the Club as the President’s Cup or Trophy; it was originally housed in a case that was purchased for £6.

The Conditions of Play for the Club Championship have remained similar over the years, in the first instance on a nine-hole course, 36 holes of stroke play were followed by the leading 8 players taking part in semi-finals and finals match play. The finals have been played over 36 holes since 1946, the number of qualifiers increased from 8 to 16 for many years before reverting back to the current 8. The only exception to this format occurred in 1933, a 72-hole stroke play event that was played over 4 consecutive Saturdays.

The Club Championship was not played from 1940 to 1945 due to World War 2.
