Pennant finals await for Glenelg’s teams

Women's Grade 1 Players & Caddies

Glenelg’s 2015 Golf SA Pennant season will come to an exciting climax this weekend when our Women’s Grade 1, men’s Bonnar Cup and junior Sharp Cup teams all compete for their respective pennant titles on Sunday.

For our Women’s Grade 1 team, they now have they opportunity to take out 4-in-a-row after claiming the 2012, 2013 and 2014 titles.  Glenelg’s women have dominated the Grade 1 pennant competition over the last decade and another win this weekend against The Grange will reinforce the Club’s position as the leading female development club in South Australia.

Glenelg’s regular number one, Jenny Lee, will be absent for the final with tournament commitments overseas.  However, she will be replaced by 2015 Club Champion, Elysia Yap, who will be trying to maintain her unbeaten record this season when she is expected to come up against The Grange’s number one, Ella Adams.  With Glenelg only losing two individual games for the entire 2015 season, the team will surely go into the finals as favourites, however The Grange team will field a formidable line up of its own and cannot in any way be discounted.  Glenelg’s girls will have a tough ask ahead of them if they wish to claim the golden 4-in-a-row result.

Women’s Grade 1 final squad:  Jess Burns, Sarah Crocker, Jill Hodge, Josie Hodge, Sophie James, Elysia Yap

The Women’s Grade 1 final, between Glenelg and The Grange, hits off from the 1st tee at Kooyonga Golf Club at 10:35am this Sunday.

Glenelg's Jackson KalzThe Bonnar Cup final will see a rematch between the 2014 finalists, with Glenelg once again taking on competition leader, The Grange, in the final at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club on Sunday.  Hopefully, history can repeat itself with Glenelg defending its hard earned 2014 title, its first since 2008.

The Grange team will be difficult to beat after going through the minor rounds undefeated and clearly standing out as the strongest team of the competition and finals favourite.  However, Glenelg’s group, a mix of young and experience, have only lost one match in 2015 (a 7-0 defeat to The Grange in round 2) and should be keen to take revenge on the team’s loss during the season.

16-year old left-handed sensation, Ben Layton, will be keen to continue his good form having won his last five games straight, whilst the baby of the team, Jackson Kalz, at only 15 years of age, will also be hoping to cap off a successful season after winning five out of his seven matches so far in 2015.  The team’s number one, Luke Bashford, will also want to finish off a fine season with another win to add to the four wins and one half already in the bag.

Bonnar Cup final squad: Luke Bashford, Henry Duregon, Jackson Kalz, Braeden Kelly, Liam Kennewell, Ben Layton, Ben Magi, Mark McDonald, James McDonald

The Bonnar Cup final, between Glenelg and The Grange, hits off from the 1st tee at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club at 11:10am this Sunday.

Glenelg Junior High Performance squad member, Aaron BuchananAnd in the biggest sensation of the year, our junior Sharp Cup team will take on last week’s opponent, Kooyonga, around their home track this Sunday after a stunning 3-2 victory over the previously undefeated team at Glenelg last Sunday.  With a number of key players missing from the team last Sunday, our youngsters, including debutantes Austin Baker, Harrison Edwards and Lachy Barker performed well beyond expectations to deservedly claim their spot in this week’s final.

With brothers, Aaron and Jack Buchanan, back this week, and Jacob Rillotta also returning to the side, they will be joined by Marcus Kuys and Austin Baker in a very solid finals line-up.  Only Jack Tanner, who played at number one for most the of season, will be missing from a full strength side this week.

Glenelg last played in the Sharp Cup final in 2013, going down to Kooyonga around our own home track, so the team will be very keen to make amends for that loss and claim this year’s title around our opponent’s home course.  Glenelg last won a Junior Pennant title in 2006.

We encourage all of our members to come out and support Glenelg’s pennant teams in their finals contests this Sunday.  Not only will your support be very much appreciated, it might be just what is required to get our teams over the line and claim their respective pennant titles.
