Bonnar Cup boys bounce back with strong victory

Glenelg's Luke Bashford

Report by Wayne Humphries (Team Manager)

The Bonnar Cup boys responded really well to last week’s disappointing result and stuck to their task in atrocious conditions at Blackwood to win a critical match against Tea Tree Gully 5.5-1.5.

It was bitterly cold and several heavy showers lashed the course – the 6th hole was taken out of play due to the green being water logged – and at one stage there was great concern that the match could even be abandoned due to several other greens almost becoming unplayable – that would have been a tragedy for us as we held big leads in five of the matches half way through the contest.

In the conditions it would have been easy for the boys to drop their bundle and just go through the motions, but to their credit, they kept focused and adapted better to gain the ascendancy.

From early on the Glenelg boys took the advantage – after eight holes we were well ahead in five matches and square in the other two.

Jackson Kalz at No.7 maintained his Saturday form (he shot a 69 off the stick!) to be 3 up after seven holes and maintained that margin to win 3/2.

Mark McDonald at No. 6 was 2 up after seven holes and kept control of his match to win 2/1.

Liam Kennewell at No.5 hung in really well – he was either square or 1 down through the front nine but lost the 10th hole (the first – we hit off the tenth tee) to go 2 down but maintained the pressure on his opponent to square his match on the 17th and halved the last for a squared result.

Ben Layton at No.4 played really well to be 3 up after eight holes and maintained his fine form to win his match 5/4.

Braeden Kelly at No.3 also played really well. He took advantage of his good form to be 4 up after seven holes and was relentless on his opponent to also win his match 5/4.

Ben Magi at No. 2 had a competitive match all day – He was square after four, square after seven and still square after eleven holes. He was a little unlucky on the 16th hole (the 7th) – one down playing this hole, his second shot in to the par five hit in to the trees on the right – and stayed up the tree!! A subsequent loss on this hole put him 2 down and a half on 17 saw a 2/1 loss for Ben.

Luke Bashford at No.1 was cold, wet and miserable early on – I suspect he and his caddie Josh Hodgson would have quite happily gone back to the club house after four holes!! But Luke was resolute; 1 down after three holes, he played tremendous golf in the conditions to win the next six holes to turn 5 up and continued to play par golf to win 6/5. A great result at No. 1.

A special thank you to all the caddies – Josh Hodgson, James Bridgen, Jack Hynes, James McDonald and Paul Grosvenor. Their support to the players in such trying conditions was invaluable.

We are now back on track in our pursuit of a final’s berth. We have a bye for the long weekend with our next match against The Vines at Kooyonga on Sunday 14th June from 11.20am.

It will now be important to consolidate our second position on the ladder by maintaining the pressure and focus to win our next few matches.
