Bonnar Cup side cruise through to final with big win

Solid win takes us through to the Final.

Glenelg’s Bonnar Cup boys came to Kooyonga to play! A win was vital to grab a spot in the Final – the Tea Tree Gully boys still had a slim chance to make the Final but had to beat us 6/1 – but our boys took up the challenge and were competitive throughout the day.

After nine holes we held the advantage, being ahead in four games, behind in two and one game square.

Marty Ardill at No. 7 had a tight tussle for most of the day – he turned 1 up and maintained that advantage for most of the back nine – holing two crucial 15 foot putts on the 14th and 17th to secure a 2/1 victory.

James Brown at No.6 recovered from losing the first hole to turn 4 up and went on to record a resounding 6/5 win.

Braeden Kelly at No.5 started solidly to be 4 up after five holes – his opponent steadied somewhat, but Braeden kept control and was 3 up for most of the second nine to finish with a long birdie putt on 16 to record a 3/2 win.

James Bridgen at No.4 recovered from 2 down after six to win six of the next nine holes and win 4/3.

We now had four wins in the bag and had guaranteed our Final spot.

Ben Magi at No.3 was having a titanic struggle against former state player John Davey – there was never more than one hole between them all day. Ben was 1 down after five, square after nine, 1 up after 14 and still 1 up playing the last. However a lost ball off the last tee resulted in a halved game.

Will Starkey at No.2 was 1 down after nine and struggling to close the gap, still 2 down after 15 – but wins on 16 and 17 had Will playing the last all square – steady pars from both players resulted in another halved game.

Earlier Sam Raschella at No.1 had succumbed to very steady golf from his opponent to lose his game 5/4 – but this was our only loss.

So a great team result and another shot at Bonnar Cup glory next week.

Special thanks to Jess Burns, Elysia Yap and Cathy Symons for taking on caddying duties after the Woman’s Pennant was abandoned earlier in the day – your support was greatly appreciated.

We now meet Grange in the Final next Sunday at Flagstaff Hill with hit off from 11.10am. This will be a tough assignment but the Glenelg boys have worked hard on their games and are well prepared and will give it their best shot – this is the contest we have been working towards and waiting for all season – BRING IT ON!
