Simpson Cup team fall just short in round 2

Report by Geoff Attenborough (Team Manager)

On a perfect day for golf at Tea Tree Gully, Glenelg’s Simpson Cup team just came up short against a strong Kooyonga team losing 4 matches to 3.

Henry Duregon started at number seven and was under pressure immediately with his opponent posting four early birdies to be 3 down.  However, Henry fought back to be only 1 down with six to play but could not make any more ground to eventually go down 3/2.

Leigh Attenborough at six just went about his business and although having some tense moments, closed his match out winning 1 up. Another good effort from the senior member of the team.

At number five, Josh Hayes won his match 3/2, and if his putter had been hot could possibly have won 7/6.  This wasa good confidence booster for Josh and could be the start of winning form he needs to go on with some big performances.

Connor Chant, in 4th position, made his pennant debut for Glenelg and was very unlucky to lose 1 down. Connor, never having played at Tea Tree Gully before, was always in for a tough match playing against a current state representative. Although getting away to a shaky start, Connor found his way around the course well only to lose 1 down.  If luck had gone his way after a poor lie on the 16th hole he played, it could have been, at worst, a half or possibly a win.

David Hiern was never in the hunt losing 5/4 at number three.  David was down badly early but could not recover.  He could have easily thrown in the towel, but to his credit, he fought out the match.  This is the attitude we are looking for to give us the ultimate success the team is looking for.

Our number two, Matt Overall, again played extremely well to win 3/2. After a slow start being 2 down early, Matt found his groove to quickly get the upper hand and go on to a solid win. The big fella is in really good form after, even by his own admission, playing poorly six weeks ago.  Just goes to show what a bit of confidence does.

Campbell Rawson, at the top of the order week in week out, plays against the best players in the state.  Unfortunately, Campbell’s opponent had a day out around the greens holing putt after putt and getting close with short pitch shots. I feel Campbell’s time is just about to come and he has a very important role to play for rest of the pennant season.

Although disappointing to lose our first two matches, this season is not done yet.  We must get on and do what we have to do and not give up.  Next Sunday, playing Tea Tree Gully at Blackwood Golf Club, gives us the opportunity  to get back into that winning zone and kick start our season.
