Simpson Cup into the Finals

Simpson Cup into the Finals

Semi-Final, 7 July

The Glenelg Simpson Cup team playing at home in cool but fine conditions against Southern in the semi final had a tough battle to win our way into next Sunday’s final.

After 9 holes we had 1 player down, 2 players well in front and all other matches even. Fortunately our boys kept their nerve to eventually complete a hard fought 5/2 win.

First player out Jackson Kalz at no 7 was not at his best today and had a tough battle against his Southern opponent who played very steady golf to get off to a fast start being 4up after 6 holes. Unfortunately Jackson could not bridge the gap eventually going down 4/3.

Josh Hayes at no 6 also had a very tough match with the score virtually being even for the first 13 holes. Josh eventually gained the upper hand being 2up after 16 holes and went on to give the team a vital match winning 2/1.

Lachlan Barker at no 5 also had a very tough battle being 2 down after 3 holes then worked back to be square after 9. Lachy again fell back to be 1 down after 15 holes.

After winning the 16th hole and then losing the 17th, Lachy was going down the 18th 1 down when his match was called a half after we had won 4 of the 7 matches.

Jack Tanner playing no 4 also was under pressure for the first 9 holes being 1 down at the turn. Jack then gained a break on his opponent to be 2 up after the 16th hole. Jack then calmly birdied the 17th to complete a well deserved 3/1 win.

Ben Layton at no 3 again was outstanding completing a 7/6 win. After being 6 up after 7 holes Ben never gave his opponent a look in to continue an outstanding pennant season.

At no2 Sam Earl was another of our team having a very tight tussle with his match being even after 9 holes. Sam then gained a break to be 2 up after 16 holes. Like Lachy Barker’s match this was called a half at the 16th as the team had completed the win.

Jack Buchanan playing no1 was too strong for his opponent also winning his match 7/6. After being 3up after 6 holes, Jack showed his class to be 5 up after 8 holes eventually closing out his match 7/6 and an early finish.

This semi final was a tough battle for our boys and I congratulate Southern on their determined attitude after we defeated them so convincingly last week. We now look forward to next weeks final against our arch rival The Grange. As the team has done for the whole pennant season we take nothing for granted and will have to be at our best to overcome a tough talented opponent.

Congratulations to the Women’s Sanderson Cup team in getting to the final as well as our men’s Bonner Cup team who also have a place in the final next Sunday.

Thanks to all of the caddies for assisting our players. Also thanks to all club members who came out to support all of our teams. The teams really appreciate the support and can sometimes make the difference between winning and losing.
