Simpson Cup Report
Round 6, 23 June
On a fine but cold day our Simpson Cup Team played a very talented Kooyonga Team at Thaxted Park Golf Club. This was always going to be a very testing match on the redesigned Thaxted course with fast and sometimes hard to read greens. Finishing with a halved match 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 each.
Anthony Olsen our first player out at no7 after an even start for the first 5 holes then gained a distinct advantage being 4up after 9 holes. With his opponent trying to play catchup golf Anthony kept the pressure on to complete a decisive 6/5 victory.
Michael Munn next out at no6 had a very tough battle in his match with neither player having more than a 1 hole advantage for the entire match. After being 1 down at the 16th hole Michael won the 17th to be square playing the 18th hole. Unfortunately Michael lost the 18th to a very good birdie to lose 1 down.
Playing no5 Jackson Kalz had an out of sorts day playing ex Glenelg member Frank Vucic. After staying in the match for the first 5 holes Jackson lost 4 holes to be 4 down after 10. After being able to bridge the gap Jacko lost his match 5/3. We are sure he will bounce back next week.
Our captain Josh Hayes at no4 playing great Kooyonga player Heath Riches was another of our team to have a great match. Like Michael Munn’s match there was only a 1 hole advantage for the whole 18 holes. Unfortunately Josh finished his match losing 1 down in a high quality encounter.
Young Gun Jack Tanner at no3 was another of our team to only have a 1 hole advantage either way for his whole match. After being 1 down after 5 holes then 1 up after 9 and then 1 down again at the 13th hole Jack gained a 1 hole advantage after 16 holes. He unfortunately lost the 17th to go down the last square. Holding his nerve Jack halved the 18th to have a well deserved halved match.
Ben Layton at no2 continued his great form with an outstanding 8/6 win. This followed last weeks outstanding 7/6 win at Mt Compass Golf Club. Ben after 6 holes was 3up and then showed his complete dominance to be 6up after 9. This match was completed with Ben closing out a comprehensive win.
At no1 Sam Earl also had a very difficult match like some of the previous matches only having a 1 hole margin for either player for almost the entire match. After 9 holes Sam was 1up then fell back to be 1 down after 13 holes. Not to be outdone Sam won 4 holes in succession to complete a hard fought 3/1 win. The feature being a great birdie with a chip in on the 16th hole for a virtual winning margin.
For our boys this was our toughest test for the season on a difficult golf course. Our opponent Kooyonga are a quality team and will be a force to be reckoned with in the finals along with Grange and likely semi finalist Southern.
Again as we have stated throughout the season we take 1 match at a time and take nothing for granted as we have another tough match next week against Southern at Tanunda Pines Golf Club.
Thanks to all caddies and members who come out week in week out to support all of our Pennant teams we would still like to see more come out especially with the finals coming around in 2 weeks.
