Simpson Cup Leading the Way

Simpson Cup Leading the Way

Round 1, 12th May

The Glenelg Simpson cup team travelled to The Vines of Reynella Golf Club to play The Grange Golf Club in a replay of the 2018 final. With our team winning the previous three cup finals our boys are well aware that we are the hunted and all other clubs will be doing their best to beat us.

Well our season could not have begun any better with a convincing 6 matches to 1 win.

This start gives our team great confidence going forward but the team management will be making sure there will be no complacency setting in at this early stage of the season and we will be taking each match with the same importance.

David Hiern playing at no7 was our first match out. After getting off to a slow start being 2 holes down after 2 David steadied to remain 2 down after 9 holes. Unfortunately after being 3 down after 12 and with his opponent playing very steady golf David could not bridge the gap going down 2/1.

Michael Munn at no6 was off to a good start being 1up after 3 holes extending out to 2 up after 8 holes extending out to being 3up after 12. Michael played very well to close out his match 3/2.

After spending the last week away with the state golf team young gun Jack Tanner showed his quality with a solid win. After being 2up after 7 holes Jack showed his class to be 4up after 12 holes to go on to a strong 5/4 victory.

Josh Hayes our captain this year continued with his great pennant match form winning his match 2/1 against an inform Grange opponent. Josh is our mister reliable and gets the job done week in week out.

Another state team member Ben Layton played very good golf against state team mate Jamie Smith and had a strong win. After being 2up after 6 holes then 3up after 13 Ben closed out his match 4/3.

In a welcome return to the team Sam Earl was another player to record a convincing win.

With some local knowledge being a former Vines member, Sam was off to a fast start being 3up after 3 holes. He then extended to be 4up after 10 eventually going on to win 5/4.

Our other young gun and state team member Jack Buchanan had a great battle against state no1 player Jack Thompson. After being 3up after 7 holes Jack dropped a hole to be 2up after 10. The score stayed the same until the 17th. With Jack Thompson making birdie to win the 17th the match went down the 18th hole where Jack Buchanan held his nerve making par to win 1up.

Well played by the whole team.

Thanks to all caddies and members who came out to support the team.
