Round 1 McMillan Shield Report

Its that time of year again when McMillan Shield kicks off for the year. We have an amazing squad this year with lots of players keen to start their match play experience. The season kicked off at the Vines on a mint Sunday afternoon with sun shining and wildlife a plenty.

The Vines hospitality was once again exceptional and the course was in fantastic condition. But it was a tough beginning facing The Vines at The Vines for our first outing. However, with incredible team spirit and a never give up attitude we narrowly went down in a 2/3 loss.

Our very experienced 11 year old Gareth Thiem (18) was team captain and our number one for the day. He came up against Ava Strazdins (18) who has been unbeaten in match play for two years. Both on similar handicaps it was neck and neck all day with amazing golf by both players. Constantly holding a small lead, he managed to hold off Ava taking a great captains win 2/1.

Number two this week was Jayden McGrath (22) against Brad Atkinson (23). Despite some excellent golf from Jayden, Brad had an absolute blinder with multiple birdies. Jayden fought hard but unfortunately went down 7/6.

At number 3 Mitch Munn (23) played Tasman Barbour (25). This was a rematch of last year. Off to an early deficit Mitch showed amazing determination and clawed his way back turning the tables on Tasman. One up with one to play and having to give Tasman a shot on the last Mitch held his nerve putting the pressure on with a sensational first putt ensuring the victory 1up.

In his first McMillan shield outing and first ever game of match play Ollie Tolhurst (48) played Joshua Lessue (33). Ollie hung in pretty well on the front nine being 3 down at the turn to a very experienced player but eventually lost 7/5. Despite the loss he had a smile on his face and learnt a lot going on to help cheer his team mates home.

Damia Muadz (54) played her first every 18 holes today at number 5 against Jono Mills (35). I was blown away when she nailed her tee shot up the first – this girl won’t be off 54 for long!!! Damia got off to an early lead being 2 up through 3 holes. Jono fought back and was 2 up though 13. Despite utter exhaustion kicking in Damia kept her head up and battled hard to eventually lose 2/1.

Reserve this week was Cooper Lessue (15) against Taj Allen (44). Despite having to give a huge number of shots Cooper battled hard in a nail biter. Oscillating between square and 1 up Cooper finished his match on 18 winning 1 up. Having seen Cooper play for the first time today I have to say watch out Bonnar Cup boys as Cooper is coming!

I have never seen a group of kids come together and bond so quickly. Once there matches were finished they were supporting their team mates. For such a young group of kids many with very little experience, their behavior was exemplary and they represented Glenelg Golf Club in a way that we can all be very proud of.

Great job to Ryan for creating such a coherent and enthusiastic team.

Next week we are at Glenelg and I know the players would love to see support from the members.

Well done team.
