Simpson Cup Report – Semi Final – Sun 2nd July 2023

Glenelg 4 def Royal Adelaide 3 at Royal Adelaide

In perfect golfing conditions we took on Royal Adelaide on their own course for the right to play in next week’s final.  As befitting a match between two evenly matched teams, it was a close tussle all day as the advantage ebbed and flowed.  We got off to a bit of a slow start but recovered to be roughly even rounding the turn.  On the back nine things slowly became clearer and both teams got 3 wins in.  This left the result down to the no. 1 match between Kade Bryant and Billy Cawthorne. Kade bravely prevailed on the 17th to clinch the win 4 matches to 3.

No. 7  Harry Leaf-Milham lost to Nathan Baulderstone 1 down.  There was nothing in this match all day.  It was square thru 11 but after 14 Harry had slipped to 2 down.  He won the 15th to get back to 1 down.  An opportunity was missed to get back to square on 17 after a roller coaster 3 putt.  On 18 both players were on the green for two with good looks at birdie.  After Harry just missed his birdie putt, Nathan lagged his putt up next to the hole securing the first point for RA.

No. 6  Nick Wake lost to Matt Lawson 4/3.  Another close match early. Nick was square after 7 but 3 losses over the next 5 holes saw him slip to 3 down.  He was not able to peg the margin back before the match finished on the 16th.

No. 5  Michael Munn def Louis Fuller 3/2.  Also close early Michael reached the turn 1 up but he was able to win 2 of the next 4 holes to get to 3 up.  He maintained that margin through to the end to get our first win of the day.

No. 4  Zac Bray def Brad Manton 2 up.  There is a common theme in these early matches with nothing in it on the front nine.   Zac won the 10th and 12th to get two 2 up but lost 13.  He was still 1 up going down the last and a great approach set up a birdie putt with he made to secure the win.

No. 3  Matt Uebergang lost to Harry Coote 2/1.  A very close match all day with both players getting to one up at some stage.  Coming down 17 Matt was one down but Harry hit two great shots into the 17th to make birdie which Matt couldn’t match.

No. 2  Harry Burner def Will Arnold 5/4.  This was a fantastic performance by Harry.  Will was undefeated during the minor round but he had no answers to Harry’s stellar play.  Harry got off to a good start and steadily built the margin closing out the match on the 14th.

No. 1  Kade Bryant def Billy Cawthorne Park 2/1.  So with the overall match score tied 3-3 it all came down to the last match resting on the slender shoulders of 16 yo Kade.  Whilst the match was close Kade held sway for most of the day but the lead was only ever 1 or 2 up.  Kade hit two great shots into the long par 4 14th to win the hole and go 2 up.  Billy bounced back on the next with a birdie to reduce the margin to one.  On the par 3 16th Billy went left into the bunker but Kade hit a great shot with about 15 feet left for birdie.  Billy couldn’t get up and down and Kade won the hole to go back to 2 up with two to play.  Kade hit his approach in to the long par 4 17th into the right side bunker and Billy hit a great shot to about 12 feet.  Kade calmly splashed out to 4 feet and Billy then missed his birdie.  This left Kade to make the putt to win his match and the overall match which he duly did!

Thanks to the supporters and to the caddies Justin Howard, Wayne Humphries, Adam Bryant, Jason Bray, Dale Penny and David Brand.

So next week it is on to the final against Kooyonga at Kooyonga from 10.15 am.  It would be great to see a big contingent of members come to support us as we can be sure that Kooyonga members will be out in force on their home track.

Sanderson Cup

Our talented Sanderson Cup girls were narrowly defeated by a strong RAGC team on their home course  on Sunday 2/7.

Zoe Manton again at no. 1 tried hard all day ,winning back some holes but finally going down 4/3.

Sarah Crocker at no. 2 played steady golf again but just fell short losing her match 2/1.

Bec Hardy at 4 had an amazing nail biting win on the 20th hole and sunk a long putt for victory. A fantastic effort.

And of course, true to form, Eliza at 5 won again to keep her perfect record of wins this season.

Thus , it came down to an unenviable finish for Chrissie Trimmer on the 21st hole, with everyone watching and hoping for a victory. Her opponent chipped to a gimme and Chrissie’s putt just lipped out, so the day was  suddenly cruelly over.

In reflection, the girls have done so well in their inaugural season of the team. They have put in an incredible amount of work and practice and preparation and they are such a happy cohesive group. It has been a delight for Fiona and I to manage the girls.

Bring on 2024!

Semi-final

Glenelg v. Tea Tree Gull @ The Grange

Housekeeping: in acknowledging the players who have contributed to our great season last week our report omitted the important win Angus Heffernan delivered v. Kooyonga after a later call up. Thanks Gus, sorry for the omission!

This week the Bonnar group continued its winning ways with a solid semi-final win over a competitive Tea Tree Gully team. We were treated to a balmy, calm Winters day on a well presented Grange East course and got the win.

Playing No. 7 James Bridgen played solid golf from the outset, putted well and delivered our first match 4&3.

Matt Jacquier then steadied after a slow start to win 3&2 for our 2nd match.

Harry Edwards, having saved his best golf for the finals, then completed a really solid 5&4 win to have us in a strong position with 3 matches in.

Our 4th win then secured victory when Ben Winton continued his winning ways at No. 4 with a steady 4&3 victory.

Max Jericho lost 5&4 at No. 3 with the No. 1 & 2 matches both unfinished square on 11 & 12.

Well done again to all the team. We now look forward to taking on The Vines at TTG next Sunday in the GF!!

As always, thanks again to our caddies Glenn Sterrey, Jack Starkey, Sam Jericho, Dave Rosey, Leanne Edwards, Gus Heffernan & Keith Barnard and supporters for all their help.

Pike Cup

The Pike Cup girls were victorious winning 3matches so the remaining matches were then squared.

The Team which began on the 10th Hole started quite well either being up or square after the first eight holes played.

Louise Pike was 3 up after eight holes after a birdie at the first hole played. Louise then went on to a great win, winning 7/5.

Sam White played well to be 2 up after nine holes played.  Then on the 16th hole played, sunk a 20 foot putt to win 3/2

Bec Hughes had a topsy turvy game being 1 down after 9 holes. Then went on to win 10th hole played and with a birdie at the 12 hole played to go one up then proceeded to the win the13th, 14th  and 15th holes to win 4/3.

As we had three matches in the Pike Cup girls had a win

The matches of Jill Hodge and Maiya Jakupec Jill Hodge were deemed to be a halve.  Jill  started well with a birdie at the 6th hole played to be 2 up at the turn. Unfortunately lost the next three out of five holes to be 1 down when her match was deemed squared

Maiya Jakupec started well to be 3 up after 9 holes played with an eagle at the 4th Hole played (13th).  She was pegged back by her opponent to be 1 down after 14 holes played and her match was also squared.

Thank you to all the supporters who came to watch especially the Bonnar Cup boys and to our great caddies who keep the players under control and focused.
