Simpson Cup Final – Sun 9th July 2023

Glenelg 3 lost to Kooyonga 4 at Kooyonga

Well this isn’t the report that I was hoping to write.  On a day that held so much promise we looked to have the upper hand as the matches entered the closing stages.  At one stage on the back nine we were ahead 5-2.  From there things started to get considerably tighter such that the score was 3-3 with one match left on course.  Harry Burner seemed to have that match under control being 3 up with 3 to play but unfortunately he lost that last 3 holes to finish square after 18 holes meaning an extra hole would be necessary to decide the fate of the Simpson Cup.

No. 7 Nick Wake def Geoff Brennan 1 up.  This was a good match-up between two veterans of pennant golf.  The match was square for the first 4 holes before Nick lost the 5th.  Nick then won the next 3 holes to go 2 up.  He managed to extend his lead to 4 up with 4 to play but struggled to close out the match finally making a clutch up and down from the greenside bunker to register our first win of the day!

No. 6 Harry Leaf-Milham lost to Heath Riches 5/4.  Harry was up against the vastly experienced Heath Riches who I believe was playing in his ninth Simpson Cup final.  Harry played some good golf on the front nine to be just one down at the turn but after that it was one way traffic as Heath pulled away on the back nine.

No. 5 Michael Munn def Jordan Percey 2/1.  This was a really solid performance from Michael against a very good up and coming player.  He was never headed getting the lead out to 3 holes after nine.  The lead was back to 2 holes after 11 which was maintained until the match was over on 17 when Michael holed a great putt.  Michael had a really strong back half of the season winning all of his last 5 matches.

No. 4 Zac Bray lost to Joel Durnford 1 down.  This was a very close match all day and could have gone either way.  Zac was 2 up thru nine holes but Joel won the next two holes to get back to square.  A loss on 15 took Zac to one down but he sensationally holed a bunker shot for eagle on the 16th to square it up again.  An errant tee shot on 17 forced a tricky recovery shot which landed on the hill behind the green and he couldn’t get up and down resulting in a lost hole which was followed by a half on 18.

No. 3 Matt Uebergang lost to Freddie Cassell 5/4.  Matt couldn’t get going in his match and he quickly found himself 4 down after 6 and 5 down at the turn.  A mini fightback got him to 3 down after 12 but losses on the next 2 holes saw the match over.

No. 1 Kade Bryant def Kyle Hayter 3/2.  This was a matchup of the heavy hitters between two state team mates.  After a half on the first Kade reeled off 3 wins in a row and he was never headed although Kyle did fight back to get the margin back to one after 10.  Wins to Kade on the next two holes got the margin back out to 3 which was the final margin when the match finished on the 16th.  A great season for Kade winning 7 of his 8 matches playing in the number one or two position.

No. 2 Harry Burner lost to Joe Hodgson on the 19th.  This was the last match on course with Kade playing behind sealing his win on the 16th. An absorbing match on the front nine with Harry reaching the turn 1 up.  Harry extended the lead to 3 after the 13th. He lost 14 but won 15 to be 3 up with 3 to play.  16 was a scrappy hole for both players but Harry lost it to a par.  Harry hit a great drive down 17 but then went in the back bunker with his approach.  Joe blocked his tee shot right and had to chip out and played his third on to the green and made 5.  Harrys bunker shot got a bad bounce off the flagstick leaving him a tricky downhill putt which slid past the hole.  His next putt then cruelly lipped out sending the match down the last hole.  On the shortish par 4 18th Joe hit a good drive into the fairway but Harry took on the challenge and bombed it down into the greenside bunker.  Joe hit a great second shot to about 10 feet under the hole.  Harry hit a good bunker shot but it was a little long leaving him to putt first. His birdie putt shaved the hole.  Joe’s putt looked like it would stop just short but it sensationally dropped leading to rapturous applause from the Kooyonga crowd. So it was off to a play off on the par 5 first.  Joe hit his tee shot way to the right into the scrub and was probably lucky to find it.  Harry hit his tee shot over the fairway bunkers but got a scrubby lie in the rough.  Another metre of carry and it would have bounded down the fairway!  Joe was able to get his second shot back into the fairway whilst Harry hit a low one down the right side rough.  Joe’s approach was well right of the hole and rolled just off the green setting up a very difficult putt over a huge mound in the green.  Harry’s approach settled on the front of the green leaving a 20 foot uphill putt for birdie.  There didn’t seem to be any way that Joe could stop his ball near the hole but he hit a great putt and made par.  Harry left his first putt about 5 feet sort but was unable to make the putt for par.

Harry had a great season leading up to the final where he played every match with only one loss which included a great win in the semi-final.  At the end of the day pennant golf is a team game and the result hinges on the results of all matches not just the one that happens to be the final match on course.

Kooyonga was the victor and congratulations to them.  Their celebrations were a little muted in the circumstances with the Kooyonga team showing outstanding sportsmanship in this regard sharing kind words with Harry and the rest of our team as did their team manager David Fraterman in his presentation speech.

It would be an understatement to say that this was a disappointing result after such a good season.  However we will dust ourselves off and have another crack next year.  We have good depth in our squad as evidenced by our winning Bonnar and Sharp Cup teams.

Thanks to the many supporters and to the caddies Justin Howard, Wayne Humphries, Adam Bryant, Jason Bray, Emma Sutton and David Brand.

Congratulations to Kade Bryant and Harry Burner on their selections in the Simpson Cup Team of the Year.

Special thanks go to:

–          Shane Robinson as the pennant guru and chairman of selectors;

Bonnar Cup

Grand Final edition

Glenelg v. The Vines @ Tea Tree Gully GC

Glenelg Golf Club completes an undefeated season to win the 2023 Bonnar Cup!!

Our undefeated Bonnar Cup team travelled to TTG last Sunday to compete in the 2023 grand final  against a competitive Vines group.  It was a cool, overcast day at TTG and the teams had to cope with frequent showers throughout the match.

As we expected, The Vines had great depth and were always going to be strong later in the order.

James Bridgen led us out at 7 and soon found himself in a tough battle with the lead swapping several times during the match to eventually loose 1 down on 18.

Matt Jacquier, at 6, also had a tough match on his hands with Chris Burns (known to many GGC members) but eventually holed a slippery 5 metre putt on 18 to win 2 up.

Harry Edwards playing 5 and not feeling the best battled hard all day to eventually come up short on 17 for a 2&1 loss.

Max Jericho also competed well in a close match but eventually fell 1 short on the 18th.

By that time, the undefeated Ben Winton had used all his experience to complete a valuable 7&6 victory and we were 2 matches to 3 down.

Also undefeated for the year, Will Starkey then continued his winning ways with a 4&3 victory on 15.

At 3 matches all, all the focus was now on the number 1 match where Mick Phillips was 2 up going down 16 then hit off 17 dormie.  A drive and approach 10 metres right of the pin had Mick in control. A first putt somewhat shorter than hoped may have opened the door for his opponent but a good stroke on the final 11/2 metre putt secured the 2023 Bonnar Cup for the Club!!

Well done to all who represented Glenelg this year in the Bonnar and especially to Ben Winton and Will Starkey who completed the season undefeated and shared the prestigious pennant player outstanding achievement award later on Sunday evening at the annual pennant dinner.

Special thanks again to the caddies who worked hard with nervous players and trying conditions all day: Glenn Sterrey, Darryn Conway, Dave Rosie, Dale Penny, Leanne Edwards, Gus Heffernan and  Keith Barnard.

Congratulations to all Glenelg teams competing in GF’s this week and especially those that won!!

Tony and I have really enjoyed the undefeated 2023 Bonnar season and would like to thank all those associated with this very successful year.

Pike Cup

The Pike Girls won their final 3 ½ to 1 ½ matches against Kooyonga at Kooyonga.  It was very much a coup for our girls as we lost 3 ½ to 1 ½ at our previous encounter also at Kooyonga.  Unfortunately Louise Pike was unable to play so Elysia Yap played.

We started on the 10th hole with very little between the matches.  After four holes played Sam White was 2 up, Elysia Yap was 1 up having halved the hole in birdies, Bec Hughes was one down after winning the hole with a birdie, Jill Hodge and Maiya Jakupec were both square.  After nine holes Maiya was 2 down Jill 1 up and Bec, Elysia and Sam were all square.  So it could have gone either way.

However the tide did turn in our favour. After the 15th hole played Sam was three up but lost the next hole to go to 2 up with two holes to play.  In the meantime Elysia won five holes in a row to win 5/3.  Bec Hughes was dormy 3 at the fifteenth hole played and won the Par 3 winning her match 4/2.

Maiya did not have her usual success and lost 5/4 to her opponent.  So we had won two matches and lost one.

Sam went down the 17th hole played and won the hole winning 3/1 which was the winning match to retain the Pike Cup for the third time.

Jill’s match was then deemed to be all square.

It was an exciting but exhausting day.  I sincerely thank our wonderful caddies and the spectators, who braved the weather to watch.  It was very much appreciated.

To my players well done and I hope you have further success with your golf for the rest of the year.

Sharp Cup

Sharp Cup Final and Season Wrap

On Sunday we took on Kooyonga at Tea Tree Gully for the Sharp Cup Final.  In soggy conditions, the result went our way, with Glenelg finishing victorious 3.5-1.5.

  • No.5 – Grace Ferrier had a dominant front 9 and was 5 up at the turn.  With a bit of a wobble, she steadied late for the win.  2/1
  • No.4 – Indie Danger controlled his match from early on and put the hammer down after the turn with a very comfortable win. 6/5
  • No.3 – Fletch Ryan opened strongly, up 4 heading to the tenth.  His opponent started dropping long putts and created a tense contest. Fletch wrestled back momentum winning 17 and halving 18 for the win. 1 up.
  • No.2 – Anthony Wang was on track to continue his undefeated season, but with the final decided, his match was concluded (he was 1 up at the time) on the 18th fairway and a half was attributed to each player
  • No.1 – After a strong season, Jack Leonard didn’t quite have his best game on Sunday and was up against a tough opponent who was in good form, resulting in a loss. 5/4

Thank you to all the Sharp Cup players.  Win, lose or draw, each week you all conducted yourselves excellently, and as a club we can all be proud of the way you represented Glenelg Golf Club.  Not only competing hard, but competing fairly and in the right spirit.  On a personal note, I enjoyed the time spent with you all and feel fortunate to have got to know you all a little better.

Jayneill Rudrappagari played in the team during the season and was reserve for the team (in the finals) and provided great support to the team (and a great attitude) while caddying for Indie Danger in the Final and Semi-Final.  Thank you also to Ramesh Rudrappagari who helped out with the caddying duties on Sunday and was a great support through the season as well as caddying week in and week out for Jayneil.

Thank you to Haydn Ryan who essentially managed the team for the season and was amazing in terms of his help and support for myself and the players all season.  Your selfless attitude, enthusiasm and experience was a huge positive for the team.  Thank you also for caddying for Grace each week, I know that she loved having you on the bag.

Thank you to Dan Leonard and Adam Wang for their support and help with caddying duties across the season.

Thank you to Frankie Thien for your support of the team during finals.

Thank you to Braeden Kelly and Ryan Reavley for taking junior pennant training every Friday and supporting the juniors more broadly.  And thank you to Shane Robinson (and the rest of the team) for the ongoing support of the juniors and all the organising and planning that takes place.

Lastly, thank you to the Junior Foundation and its supporters, without which I am sure our junior program would not yield the amazing results that are achieved each year.  And with the nurturing environment that is encouraged and cherished at Glenelg Golf Club, we have the enviable ability to see our juniors not only progress to bigger and better things as golfers, but more importantly, as great people.
