Simpson Cup Report – Round 7 – Sun 25th June 2023

Glenelg 4 1/2 def Tea Tree Gully 2 ½ at Glenelg

It was a very early start at home against Tea Tree Gully teeing off at 7.30 in arctic conditions but at least the rain stayed away.  Zac Bray had to withdraw at 6.15 am due to illness necessitating a very early call to Nick Wake to come up from the Bonnar team.  We got off to a fast start and after 3 holes we were up in 5 matches and square in 2.  From there some matches started to turn against us and early on the back nine it was very even.  However our players were able to rally and come away with a well-deserved win in the last minor round match to secure second spot on the ladder, equal with Kooyonga but behind on the countback of individual matches.

No. 7 Harry Leaf-Milham halved with Nick May.  Harry got off to a good start to be 2 up through 7 holes but lost the next 2 holes to go back to square.  He was one down after 15 but won the 16th with a good up and down.  An errant drive on 17 into the drink put him on the back foot but a great third shot set up an 8 footer for par which he was able to make to salvage a halved hole.  The 18th was a bit scrappy but Harry was onto the front of the green for 3.  His birdie putt was a little long leaving him with an 8 foot knee-knocker to halve the match which he duly made with the nervelessness of youth!

No. 6 Mick Phillips lost to Sudeera Botejue 3/2.  Mick got off to a flyer winning the first 3 holes but his opponent was able to steady to square the match at the turn.  Seemingly Mick had lost the momentum and he lost the next 2 holes and was 3 down after 14.  Halves on the next two holes saw the match over.

No. 5 Michael Munn def Adam Somerfield 3/2.  Michael also got off to another good start to be 2 up after 6.  Whilst the margin was back to 1 at the turn Michael was never headed and pulled away on the back nine for a comfortable win.

No. 4 Nick Wake lost to Matthew McMahon 3/2.  Nick had to rush to the course given his late call up and we slotted him in at no. 4 to ensure he had enough time to get ready and warm up.  The match was close all day and Nick was 1 down after 9.  He had a chance to get back to square on the 14th with a short birdie but it failed to drop.  Losses on the next 2 holes and the match was over.  So at this stage we were trailing 1 ½ to 2 ½ needing to win at 2 matches to ensure a tie or preferably 2 ½ to win.  As it turned out we would win all three!

No. 3 Matt Uebergang def Grant DeBais 2/1.  Matt was struggling on the front nine and fell to 3 down after 10.  Not to be fazed he reeled off 3 wins in a row to square the match.  He went back to 1 down on 14 when his opponent made a good up and down.  Wins followed for Matt on the next 2 holes including a chip in on 16 to go one up.  Both players bombed drives down 17 leaving short pitches to the green.  Matt hit his to 8 feet but his opponent went over the back.  He hit a good chip for a probable par but Matt made his birdie putt to complete a great win for the team to level things up.

No. 2 Harry Burner def Chris Austin 3/1.  This was a high quality match between two very good players and it was very close for most of the day.  They reached the turn all square and that remained the case after 13.  Harry hit a great tee shot into 14 with the birdie putt conceded taking him to 1 up.  A good up and down on 16 gave him the hole when Chris unexpectedly 3 putted to go down 17 2 up.  A drive into the right fairway bunker was no issue for Harry as he hit his second to about 7 feet.  Chris had about 10 feet for birdie but missed.  Harry then made his birdie to close out the win.

No. 1 Kade Bryant def Sean Park 4/2.  This was another match that was close for most of the day but in the end Kade pulled away for a very good win.  Kade was one up thru 13 but almost in the blink of an eye the match was over as he won the next 3 holes.

Thanks to the supporters who braved the icy conditions and to the caddies Paul Leaf-Milham, James Mattsson, Glenn Sterrey, Adam Bryant, Marco Rossmann, Dale Penny and David Brand.

A solid minor round record of 6-1 takes us into a semi-final next week against at Royal Adelaide at Royal Adelaide from 9.25 am.  The other semi-final is Kooyonga v Tea Tree Gully from 8.30 am.  We will be followed by our Sanderson Cup ladies team also taking on Royal Adelaide from 10.15 am.  A great opportunity for our members to see the clubs best players in action!

A big thank you to Tim Warren and his team on presenting the course in such good condition especially given the rain during the week.  Special thanks in particular to the course staff who were out in the pre-dawn darkness setting up the course for the days play.  Thanks also to Shane and Ryan in the pro shop for getting things organised and Ryan for his starting duties.

Sanderson Cup

Our clever Sanderson Cup girls went down 3/2 on Sunday to a very strong Grange team.

Zoe Manton at no.1 tried valiantly against her very skilled opponent but just lost 4/3.

Sarah Crocker at 2 missed some crucial putts by centimetres and had no luck and lost 3/2.

Chrissie Trimmer at 3 tried hard but had a hard time against her opponent and eventually lost.

Bec Hardy at 4 stayed calm and steady and won 2/1. Well played Bec.

Eliza Baker at 5 won 3/1 and showed her class and determination to get the job done.

We are in the semifinals next week so the girls would love some support if any members are able to come and watch some exciting golf at RAGC.

Thank you once again for the caddies and parents and other spectators who supported our girls.

We are in it with a chance so fingers crossed.

Glenelg v. Kooyonga @ The Vines

Some early showers and a cool, gusty wind greeted the Bonnar team at The Vines this Sunday and the group performed well, against a quality Kooyonga team, to win 6 matches to 1 and complete the home and away series undefeated for the 2023 season.

This result is a credit to all 12 players representing the club in the Bonnar Cup this year.

Zac Bray, Mick Phillips, Max Jericho, Ben Winton, Harry Edwards, Will Starkey, Matt Jacquier, Fletch Ryan, James Bridgen, Nick Wake, Ben Chinner and Jack Leonard.

In terms of the match at The Vines last Sunday all matches were tight early and, as has been typical all season, the group prevailed by maintaining a level throughout the later stages of matches to see off willing competitors.  On Sunday all played well in very trying conditions and we now look to the semi-final against Tea Tree Gully at The Grange with a great deal of team spirit, confidence and momentum.

We note that all Glenelg teams competing this year are now involved in finals next week and wish all those selected to represent the club luck in their matches.

An integral part of our success this year has been the support of player caddies.  This week we thank Darryn Conway, Wendy Featherstone, Leanne Edwards, Dave Rosey, Steve Jacquier & Keith Barnard for helping out in the tough conditions of a hills course where their support was invaluable.

We now look forward to the finals commencing the Sunday at The Grange.

Pike Cup

Pike Cup played at Sandy Creek against Royal Adelaide in very blustery and cold conditions, to win 5 matched to nil.

At the beginning all matches were very even until the ninth hole.

Louise Pike was square after four holes to go 3 up after nine to go on and birdie the Par 5 15th to win 5/4

Sam White had a slow start being 2 down after four holes but gained momentum to be 1 up after 9 holes to go on to win 3/2

Bec Hughes started steady and was 1 up after nine. Bec holed a 6 iron on the 10th hole for birdie to win the hole and went on to win 2/1

Elysia Yap, who filled in for Jill Hodge started slowly but went on to win 4/2. Well done Yappy and thanks again for filling in.

Maiya had a great start being 4 up after four holes and remained 2 up after nine. She won the 12th, 13th and the 14th with a birdie to win 5/4

Well done again girls and all the best for the Semi Finals at The Grange. Thanks again to our caddies, who endured the terrible conditions.

Tea Tree Gully versus Glenelg Golf Club

Round 5 was held at Kooyonga Golf Club. The team prepared for rain, but it was only the wind the players had to contend with. In testing conditions, the team came away with a solid win.

GGC finished second after the qualifying rounds and looks forward to playing Grange at Glenelg Golf Club in the semi-finals this Sunday 2nd of July.

  • Grace Ferrier teed off first and toughed out a great win. 1 up
  • Indie Danger stayed strong for a convincing win. 4/3
  • Fletch Ryan battled hard against form but ended up going down. 2/1
  • Anthony Wang was too solid and came away with the win. 4/3
  • Jack Leonard played super strong and came away with the win also. 2/1

Overall result: GGC 4 wins to TTG 1

Next round is the semi finals at GGC. Thanks to all caddies and support staff.

Women’s A3

The A3 semi-final against West Lakes took place on Monday in chilly but sunny conditions.  A very exciting finish to an enthralling encounter but unfortunately a heart-breaking result for our Glenelg girls.

As we suspected with the way our season has unfolded, it was going to come down to the last match on the dying holes to decide the grand finalist.

Wendy Vaughan and Fiona Eblen were the first two to head out in their matches but found the home side opposition too strong with incredible short games on point.

At 2 matches down, it was up to the remaining three in Jo Ricourt, Tonia Ross and Jo Rawson to turn the tide.  Jo and Tonia both played with grit and determination to win their respective matches and bring the game score back to 2 all.

Enter our number one player, Jo Rawson who was up against a very strong and seasoned player in Gail Beaumont.  Jo started strongly and was leading by one or two holes for most of the round.  At the 16th Jo was two up and pressure was mounting as both players knew by then that the result came down to their match.  Gail drew on all her experience to win the 16th and 17th and bring the match back to square.  Down 18, play was even and with both missing putts the match was extended.  We were back to the 1st hole.

The crowd had built up by now with both local and Glenelg supporters in tow.  Jo played great golf to square the 1st.  At the 2nd par 3, Jo put her ball on the green whilst Gail was short in the greenside bunker.  A good shot out but still at least 8 feet from the hole.  Jo’s long putt narrowly missed but secured the par.  With great anticipation, we watched as Gail sent down her putt.  Our hearts sunk as it dropped in the hole!

Onto the 21st – both players were strong down the fairway but Gail’s chip shot to within 3 feet of the hole secured West Lakes the win.  An amazing effort by Jo under enormous pressure!

Whilst we didn’t get the result we wanted, I was proud in the way that everyone showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm for this match and throughout the whole season.  A great group of women to be involved with and no doubt we will be back with determination in 2024!

A big thank you to our support network and the caddies – Juliet, Annabel, Jill, Lou and Imelda. I know that the players value your amazing support and contribution.

Junior Division 2

The Junior Div 2 team played Mid North today at Kooyonga in cold and windy weather. We were thankful for some sunshine and no rain! We had a full team of 5 today, unlike some other weeks, however against a stronger team and with two of our players feeling unwell we were unable to put up our best challenge.

Gareth Thien led us off again this week. Coming off a roll in the previous two matches, Gareth was able to hold his ground in the 1st nine. However in the 2nd nine he was unable to keep the momentum going against a much steadier Angus Lemon who played some great shots, and Gareth eventually conceded 3 & 2.

Jayden McGrath had a very close match again today, almost a repeat of last week’s match. Heartbreakingly he was unable to turn it into a win this week. It was very evenly matched throughout, the score going to either player all the way to the 16th hole. He finally lost the last two holes and went down 2 & 1 to Zack Goers.

Hunter Griffiths was up next, but faced a tough match today against Kobi Wenzel. Coupled with an ankle injury, he was unable to mount a challenge, and lost 4 & 3.

At no. 2 was Brandon Van Den Berg, playing against Brady Gray. Brandon was feeling unwell at the start but decided to play, not wanting to let the team down. Unfortunately he progressively felt unwell and had to withdraw during the match.

At no. 1, Jayneil Rudrappagari brought home our only win for this week.  The score was very close from the onset, and by the 11th hole was all square. Jayneil then managed to pull away from the 12th hole onwards and secured a resounding win against Alex Keylock 4 & 2.

With a 4-1 loss for Glenelg today, the Pennant season has come to the end for our Junior Div 2 team. Thank you to all the players, seasoned and new, who have played for Div 2 – Grace, Jayneil, Brandon, Hunter, Jayden, Holly and Gareth – for giving your 100++% efforts and fighting hard, despite facing a number of experienced teams with high handicaps.  I’d also like to thank the caddies who have come out every week to support the team.

To the team – it has been a tough challenge for us this season and you have displayed great courage, sportsmanship and respect for each other and your opponents.  You should be very proud of yourselves! I am very proud of how you represented Glenelg GC and turned up every week with your energy and fighting spirit. I hope this season has been a valuable learning experience in your golfing journey.  Hope to see all of you representing Glenelg GC again in the future.
