Simpson Cup Report – Round 6 – Sun 18th June 2023

Glenelg 4 def Royal Adelaide 3 at Grange (East) 10th tee

We went into this match against no. 2 ranked Royal Adelaide without Jack Buchanan (overseas) and Zac Bray (unavailable).  Coming into the team was Nick Wake and Mick Phillips.  The weather was cold and windy but the rain stayed away.  The match was very close all day and although two matches were lost early we also got an early win.  In the end it came down to 3 games that went down to the last hole all square that was the deciding factor and we were victorious in two of them.

No. 7 Harry Leaf Milham lost to Nathan Baulderstone 5/3.  Harry got off to a great start and was 3 up after 5.  However he was unable to consolidate his position and his opponent took control for the rest of the day playing some very good golf.  A valuable learning experience for a 15 year old in his first season of men’s pennant.

No. 6 Nick Wake def Anthony Olsen 1 up.  This was a classic match between two experienced pennant players with Anthony being a former Glenelg member.  There was never more than one hole in it all day and they came to the last hole all square.  Nick hit a good tee shot on the par 5 9th and then another good shot to lay up short of the greenside bunkers.  Anthony was in the left waste area off the tee and then in the right waste area after two.  He couldn’t get in on the green for 3 and while Nick hit a good third shot it rolled off the left of the green.  The best Anthony could make was a 6 leaving Nick with a 20 foot putt for the win which he duly made!  This putt would end up being crucial to the overall result.

No. 5 Mick Phillips lost to Will Arnold 7/5.  A tough match for Mick and he was never in it all day with Will just too steady.

No. 4 Michael Munn def Brad Manton 3/2.  This match was very close early and Michael reached the turn 1 up.  From there has was able to apply the pressure winning two of next 4 holes and recording a very good win against the former Flagstaff Hill player.

No. 3 Matt Uebergang def Louis Fuller 1 up.  It would turn out that this was the deciding match of the day although that seemed unlikely in the early stages.  After 8 holes Matt was 3 down.  At this stage his caddy Marco arrived and that seemed to help turn things as around as Matt went on to win the next 5 holes.  However two losses in the next 4 holes saw that match go down the par 5 ninth all square.  Both hit excellent tee shots.  Louis hit his second left of the green and then chipped over the back.  Matt hit a towering iron onto the front of the green for two.  The best Louis could make was 6 and he conceded Matt’s birdie putt for the win that gave us the winning 4th match.

No. 2 Harry Burner def Harry Coote 5/4.  Harry was playing a state player and the match was very close on the front nine as expected from two high quality players.  After 8 holes it was all square but after that it was all one way traffic as Harry put on the ‘afterburner’ to win the next 5 holes in a row and close out the match.

No. 1 Kade Bryant lost to Billy Cawthorne 1 down.  Kade was up against another former state player in this match and he held sway for most of the day.  He was one up at the turn and got to 3 up with 4 to play with the match seemingly in his keeping.  However Billy was not done with yet and he proceeded to win the last 4 holes including a chip in eagle on the 7th and birdie on the 9th after Kade’s own birdie putt just slid past the hole.

Thanks to the supporters who braved a cold day and to the caddies Paul Leaf-Milham, Wayne Humphries, Glenn Sterrey, Adam Bryant, Marco Rossmann, Emma Sutton and David Brand.

This was a great result for us and moves us up to second position on the ladder heading into the final minor round match next week which will be at home against 4th placed Tea Tree Gully from 7.30 am.  The top 4 is settled but positions within the four are all up for grabs as top placed Kooyonga will play third placed Royal Adelaide.  It would be great to see a good turnout of members to support us.  Also the ladies Sanderson Cup team will be in action at Glenelg from 11.15 am against Grange so why not make a day of it!

Sanderson Cup

Glenelg were victorious 4 matches to 1 over Blackwood on Sunday 18/6/23 at a very windy South Lakes Golf Club.

At no. 1 Zoe Manton had the upper hand all day and showed her true talent winning her match 3/2.

Sarah Crocker playing at no.  2 played steady golf keeping herself focused until her final 5/4 win.

Chrissie Trimmer fought hard to finally finish her match 4/2 and displayed excellent skills with her new sticks.

Bec Hardy had a close match but came up just short of a win going down 3/1.

Eliza Baker ripped up the course and won convincingly 8/7 and showed us what a great player she is.

Thanks must go to the caddies and to the 2 “ local caddies “  from Chrissie Trimmer’s family who were so helpful with their home ground advice and help for Chrissie and Eliza.

Well done girls on a successful day and keeping the team alive for the finals in a fortnight.

Bonnar Cup

Sunday 18 June 2023

Glenelg v. North Adelaide @ Royal Adelaide

A cool Northerly breeze/wind made for tough conditions, especially from the back blocks of a challenging Royal Adelaide on Sunday morning.

Bonnar were looking to consolidate top spot this week and welcomed back an in form Jack Leonard & the ever reliable James Bridgen and introduced a first time rep Ben Chinner to take on the lower ranked North Adelaide.

Jack at 7 and Ben at 6 were both unlucky to lose balls off the 1st drive into a low morning sun on grassy mounds left. However, both rallied to return early wins with Jack finishing 7&6 & Ben up 6&5. James then contributed a hard fought square to set up the day for the rest of the group.

Matt Jacquier continued his hot streak with a convincing 7&5 win.

The reliable Ben Winton then delivered our 4th win with a solid 3&2 result.

Will Starkey was again impressive at 2 with a 6&4 victory.

Max Jericho finally succumbed 2&1 down after fighting hard all day.

The 51/2 matches to 11/2 victory consolidates top spot for the season for the Glenelg group which reflects the high quality of all Bonnar reps this year.

We now look forward to the final minor round fixture next Sunday where we take on Kooyonga at the Vines, hitting off at 12:10.

Thanks as always to the caddies Dan Leonard, April Starkey, Dave Rosie, Steve Jacquier, Keith Barnard & Alex Manton and all those who came out to support.

Pennant Report for Pike Cup 18th June 2023

The Pike Cup girls enjoyed a 5 to 0 win over The Grange at Royal Adelaide in very tiring windy conditions

Louise Pike playing at number five position was 1 up after 5 holes then to go two up after ten holes only to lose the nest two holes to be square after 12 holes.  Louise then went on to win three of the next four holes to win 3/2.

Sam White had a good start being 2 up after two holes but was then pegged back to be square, after  seven holes.  Sam then won the next three holes to be 3 up after 10 holes, eventually winning 4/3.

Bec Hughes was never down to her opponent. Starting strongly to be 2 up afters two holes to be 6 up after eleven holes to go on to win 6/5.

Jill Hodge started well, being 2 up after 4 holes and then 5up after thirteen holes to win the 14th hole and the match 6/4

Maiya Jakupec played very well to be 6 up after seven holes then 8 up after 9 holes.  Maiya was hoping to finish her match at the 10th hole but her put did a 360 degree lipping out to halve the hole instead of winning the hole. Maiya went on to win 8/7.

Once again thanks to our caddies.  You all did a great job especially in the very windy conditions.

Also special thanks to our spectators, including  Captain Imelda Lynch, Ladies Captain Jo Ricourt and Vice Captain Kristen Jeffery.   Your support is very much appreciated.

Sharp Cup Report – Round 4 – Sunday 18th of June

Glenelg 4 defeated Country Districts 1 at Tea Tree Gully GC

This week we travelled north to Tea Tree Gully to take on Country Districts.  Conditions were windy and cold and it was soggy under foot, however, we were lucky not to see any rain until play had ended late Sunday afternoon.

Jay Rudrappagari led us out at no.5, playing against Callum Harvey.  After losing the first hole, Jay hit his straps, winning 6 and halving 2 across the next 8 holes, which gave Jay a lead of +5 at the turn.  Unfortunately the back 9 was a reversal of the front 9 and the match turned into a closely fought contest for the final two holes, Jay managing to halve both and hang on to halve the match.

At no.4 this week, we had Grace Ferrier taking on Charlie Robinson.  After a slow start, Grace took a one hole lead which she gradually built on throughout the round.  Her 3 wood off the tee, some solid putting, combined with the sage advice from her experienced caddy (Haydn Ryan) proving the difference in the end. Grace broke through for her first Sharp Cup win with a 4 and 3 victory.  Congratulations!

We had Indie Danger at no.3, up against Charlie Moseley.  Indie’s game was steady and consistent and he was able to gradually wear down his opponent by keeping the pressure on all day.  The final score was 4 and 2, with Indie in control of the match for the entire round and playing some excellent golf.

Anthony Wang was our no.2 and his opponent was Josh Goldsworthy.  Poor Josh didn’t know what hit him, with Anthony’s putter working he was sinking them from everywhere, making up for some wayward longer shots.  As Anthony said, he was “living in the trees” for a lot of the round.  At the turn, Anthony had won 7 holes and halved 2.  3 holes later the match was over 7 and 6 for what was a comprehensive victory.

Our no.1 this week was Fletch Ryan, he took on Robbie Hill.  This match started sedately with the first 3 holes being halved.  Then on the 4th hole (13th at TTG, we started from 10) a 186m par 3, the deadlock was broken when Robbie hit a magnificent tee shot for a hole in one!  Fletch was then 1 to 2 down for the next ten holes.  Despite not playing his best on the day, Fletch hung in and was able to claw his way back and go one up with two to play.  Unfortunately, he lost the 17th and after halving 18, the match ended square.

With 3 really good wins and no losses, it was a solid 4-1 result for the Glenelg team.

Thank you to the caddies – Haydn Ryan and Ramesh Rudrappagari – your help and support is greatly appreciated.

Next week we’re at Kooyonga taking on Tea Tree Gully with a 12.30pm tee time.

Women’s A3

This week the A3s took to the muddy and water-logged fairways of Blackwood.  Unfortunately, conditions were pretty poor with casual water covering a large part of the fairways.  On the bright side, the rain stayed away and there were even patches of sunshine which made it a little more bearable.

The team was up against Royal Adelaide battling it out for 3rd spot ahead of next week’s semi-finals.

Keeping with this season’s theme, we had another very close match with the result coming down to the last putt on the 18th hole.

Fiona Eblen and Jo Rawson were very strong in their matches getting off to good starts and leading right through taking their matches 4/3 and 3/2, respectively.

Wendy Vaughan unfortunately lost her match after taking an early lead.  Her opponent clawed her way back and with the momentum took out the match 3/2.

Jo Ricourt and Tonia Ross were embroiled in very close matches with the score swinging one or two holes right through to the 17th when both matches were brought back to square!

Jo went on to square the last hole to record the half and it was left to Tonia to at least square the 18th to bring the team a win.  With both Tonia and her opponent on the green for two it was down to the putt.  Tonia putting first missed narrowly which left the door open for her opponent who lucky for us succumbed to the pressure and missed.  A squared hole and match for Tonia and a fantastic overall win to the team 3 matches to 2!

Glenelg ended the minor round 3rd on the ladder and will take on 2nd place West Lakes next Monday in the semi-final on their home ground.  Fortunately, we have a good track record at beating West Lakes at West Lakes so hoping we can continue this tradition!  We would love to have some supporters out there to cheer on the girls!

A big thank you to this week’s caddies – Juliet Culley, Jackie Burke, Jill Gehling, Louise Pike and Imelda Lynch.

Women’s Cleek 2

Glenelg vs The Vines at Kooyonga

Cleek girls shine

This was always going to be our final match for the season and when we saw that the team was, for the 3rd time this season, having to give 18 strokes to the opposing team, we feared the worst.

Most of our quite inexperienced team had never played at Kooyonga but happily, all began very well and soon went ahead in their matches.

Number 1 player Cathie Molloy went from strength to strength throughout her match winning 5 up on the 15th.

Julie Gobbie at No 2 had the closest match of the day with the lead changing several times. It was the only match to reach the 18th hole with the win going to The Vines.

Jennifer Carlaw at No 3 played steadily to stay ahead of her opponent throughout the day. Jen had to give 5 strokes but went on to win 3/1.

Anne Tait played superbly today and just went from strength to strength despite giving 6 strokes to her opponent.

Not to be outdone, Sharon Taylor at No 5 started very strongly and was 5 up after 6 holes. Sharon went on to win convincingly 7/6. Her only regret was not to play the entire course at Kooyonga.

Well done ladies: a convincing 4/1 win today.

Congratulations to all members of the Cleek squad. It has been a very steep learning curve for many who have recently come through the Try Golf program here at Glenelg. Today was yet another step forward. We believe this augers well for our Cleek team next season.

It has been such a pleasure working with all members of the squad. Their camaraderie and enthusiasm for the game have been excellent and it has been fantastic to see them striving to improve

Finally thank you to our great caddies Simon Tait, Thyra Oakley and Heather Bedson. Your help has been so much appreciated.

Junior Division 2

The Junior Div 2 team travelled to Tea Tree Gully to play The Grange. It was windy and chilly, despite it being very sunny!

I commend our team for fighting to the very end in all their matches – our team came out 2-2 with the 4 players that we had – with a win, a loss and 2 halves. Unfortunately we were short of one player today, so the overall score was 2-3 to our opponents.

Gareth Thien led us off again, and coming off his win a fortnight ago, seemed to have gained some confidence in his game. Up against Mason Holden with a stronger handicap, Gareth focused on just getting his shots consistently on the fairway. He was 3-up in the 1st nine and managed to secure a 3 & 2 win.

Holly O’Connell played Reid Scott, and was 3-down in the 1st nine. She fought hard throughout the 2nd nine and managed to claw back to square by the 16th hole.  She then lost the 17th and held on till the very end winning the 18th, scoring a half for Glenelg.

At no. 2 was Jayden McGrath, playing Tayan Scott. The match had a lot of momentum swings throughout and Jayden managed to inch his way to a 2-up lead by the 14th hole, which he held to the 16th.  Unfortunately he was not able to hang on to his lead and lost the last two holes, resulting in a halved match.

At no. 1 this week was Hunter Griffiths. This was a very close match, with 10 of the 18 holes at a tie.  At the turn Hunter was 1-down, and by the 16th it was all square again.  In the end, Jiaqi Xin managed to edge Hunter out by winning the last 2 holes.

Hard luck today, but well done again to the team and the constant improvement and grit that you display on the course.
