Simpson Cup Report – Round 5 – Sun 4th June 2023

Glenelg 6 def Flagstaff Hill 1 at Tea Tree Gully

The Tea Tree Gully course was presented in excellent condition and despite some dark skies, the rain held off until all of the matches were finished.  The day started well for us with all of the early players getting off to good starts.  The trend continued for the rest of the day and were able to record a very good 6-1 win over Flagstaff Hill.  All 6 wins were very comfortable with the other match going to the 18th.

Young Harry Leaf-Milham came back into the team this week and he got off to a fast start against Luke Sandford.  He was 5 up at the turn and cruised to a strong 7/6 victory in his first Simpson Cup win.  Congratulations Harry.

In a similar vein Michael Munn was quickly out to a 3 hole lead over Aaron Shepherd after 5 and was also 5 up at the turn before winning 6/5.

Going out at no. 5 Zac Bray continued the pattern against Sam Conlon.  He was also 3 up at the turn going on to win 6/4.

Matt Uebergang had a fight on his hands early against Paul McDonnell and was square after 5 holes.  However birdies on the next two holes saw him take the lead which was not surrendered going on to win 4/3.

Harry Burner was involved in the only close match of the day playing against Craig Heddles.  He slipped to two down early and was 1 down at the turn.  Despite some good golf he was not able to get ahead.  He found himself 2 down with 2 to play.  A solid par on the 8th (our 17th) was enough to win the hole to go down the par 5 last 1 down.  Harry hit a great drive followed by a 6 iron onto the green for 2.  Meanwhile his opponent was bunkered off the tee and had to lay up well back.  His third shot was well to the right of the green but a fortuitous bounce off the cart path sent it back towards the fringe of the green.  He putted down to around 5 feet leaving Harry with two putts to win the hole and halve the match.  His eagle putt was a bit aggressive and slid past the hole.  His opponent made his par putt but Harry was unable to make his birdie losing 1 down.

Kade Bryant flew out of the blocks against Drew Grieve to put himself 7 up at the turn.  However he struggled to close it out as quick as he would have liked and lost a few holes on the back nine but still recorded a comfortable 4/3 win.

And finally at the no. 1 position Jack Buchanan was playing Danny Ford.  Jack got off to a fairly slow start by his standards but as so often happens other players can only hold on for so long against a class player like Jack.  He was 1 up at the turn and quickly closed it out 5/4.  Jack has now played his final Pennant match for the season as he heads to America to play in a series of elite amateur tournaments with a view to qualifying for the US Amateur.  Good luck Jack and thanks for your efforts in the first half of the season.

There are now 4 teams tied at the top of the table with a 4-1 win loss record.  We are currently third just 1 individual match behind the leader Kooyonga.  In the final two rounds we play two of the top 4 teams in Royal Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully.

Thanks to the caddies David Brand, Adam Bryant, Emma Sutton and Jason Bray.  Next week is a bye for the long weekend.  We resume on 18th June at Grange against Royal Adelaide from 12.10 pm.

Sanderson Cup

Sunday 4th June

Mild temperatures and blustery winds were the order of the day when we played the Southern Team at Grange

Zoe Manton at one played great golf all day and won 6/5. Well done Zoe.

Sarah Crocker played good steady golf but unfortunately her opponent’s short game was outstanding. Sarah won the 17th to be one down but had some bad luck on the 18th and so lost the match 2 down.

Christine Trimmer had a great battle with her opponent Deb Christie – both girls played strong consistent golf and they fittingly squared their match.

Bec Hardy had a great win playing at number 4 and comfortably won her match 7 & 5. Bec’s putter was red hot all day according to her father and she sealed the match with a great birdie. Congratulations Bec.

Birthday girl Eliza Baker made sure she could celebrate in style with a solid 6 and 4 win. Well played Eliza.

Thanks again to all the caddies – it was nice to not have to worry about the rain this week.

Well done girls – enjoy your weekend off and hopefully we can continue the winning run at South Lakes on the 18th June.

Bonnar Cup

Sunday 4 June 2023

Glenelg v. Tea Tree Gully @ Kooyonga

A stiff North-Easterly over a Kooyonga set up in championship condition with firm/hard greens and very tough pin positions was always going to challenge players in our top of the table clash with TTG this week and the Bonnar boys came through with a great 61/2 matches to 1/2 victory.

Matt Jacquier chipped and putted well in the trying conditions to get us off to a great start with a 3&2 win.

Harry Edwards, 2 down early, rallied strongly for a great 4&3 win.

Will Starkey, managed the conditions well for another great contribution to maintain his undefeated status by winning 2up.

Ben Winton again used all his experience to secure a solid 5&4 win.

Max Jericho, fresh from being named in the SA School boys team, had the toughest match, winning holes 16 & 17, to eventually come away all square in fading light on the 18th.

Mick Phillips again played well, was up all day in a close battle, finishing on the 17th with a solid 2&1 victory.

Finally, playing at 1, Nick Wake showed everyone how to play competitive golf in tough conditions, winning 5&4 on the 14th and returning a card of 13 pars and 1 bogey – a great contribution demonstrating to all the quality and depth Glenelg golf is bringing to Bonnar Cup in 2023.

An ‘all played well’ victory that consolidates our top spot on the ladder. The team now looks forward to a well earned long week-end rest before taking on North Adelaide at RA on Sunday 18 June hitting off at 8:25.

Thanks as always to the caddies Wayne Humphries, Glenn Sterrey, Brian Featherstone, Dave Rosie, James Bridgen, Leanne Edwards (also for the manager’s quiche again) & Steve Jacquier and all those who came out to support.

Pike Cup

3rd Round Pike Cup at Kooyonga Golf Club vs Kooyonga 4th June 2023

Unfortunately it was not a very good day for the Pike Cup girls going down to Kooyonga 1 ½ matches to 3 ½.

Our only winner for the day was Bec Hughes winning 3/2 playing at number 3.  The match started off with Bec being 3 up after 6 holes to be only 1 up after 13 holes but resumed her momentum to win 3/2.

Maiya Jakupec playing number one started at square after 6 holes but then went on to be 3 up after 14 holes only to lose the next three holes to be square hitting off the 18th. Maiya and her opponent squared the 18th hole in pars for the match to be square.

In the meantime Louise Pike playing at number five had a struggle with her opponent who had two birdies on the out nine to be 2 up.  Louise eventually lost 4/2.

Sam White had a slow start and was 3 down at the turn to be 5 down at the 12th hole but rallied to win the 13th  hole being on the green for two and being given the putt for an eagle.  Sam also won the  14th hole to eventually losing her match 4/2.

Jill Hodge was 3 down after 3 holes went on to be square after nine holes. Jill went on to lose the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and eventually losing 4/2.

Once again thank you to our caddies, Viktor Jakupec, Jo Rawson, Hannah Brown, Cathy Symons and Nick Eblen.

Sharp Cup

Women’s A3

This week’s round took place at Kooyonga against Blackwood.  After last week’s match was cancelled due to fog and poor weather it was nice to hit off in warm sunny conditions.

The A3s had another close match with the outcome coming down to the final match on the 18th

Imelda Lynch hit out first playing at number five and got off to a strong start but then struggled in the latter part of her match to lose 3 and 2.

Fiona Eblen at number four played excellent and consistent golf taking an early lead and holding on to take out her match 5 and 3.

Jo Ricourt at number three was up against a tough opponent who consistently hit down the middle making it tough to counter and whilst she fought valiantly to stay in the match her opponent finally took it out on the 17th going down 2 and 1.

Tonia Ross played at number two and continued her winning streak.  A close battle throughout and with the match squared, Tonia played a magnificent pitch into the 16th green to less than a foot from the hole.  This proved to be the winning stroke as she held on to take the match 2 up on the 18th.

With the team score at 2 each, it came down to Jo Rawson playing at number one.  Her match was evenly poised with Jo one ahead after 17 and just needing to square the 18th to take the win.  She played good golf to keep her ball on the fairway whilst her opponent felt the pressure and found herself in the green side bunker. A great win to Jo (2 Up) and the team – 3 matches to 2.

The A3s now sit third on the table and have one more minor round match in two weeks against fourth place Royal Adelaide at Blackwood.  This will be a good battle to determine third and fourth spot before the finals.

A big thank you to this week’s caddies – Juliet Culley, Jill Gehling, Sarah Crocker and Neil Gehling.

Women’s Cleek 2

On Monday 5th June the Cleek team played Kooyonga at Westward Ho Golf Club.

Despite best efforts we were unable to clinch a victory going down to Kooyonga 3 matches to 2. We were not able to blame the weather for our demise but each of our players had to give 3, 4 or 5 strokes to their opponent.

In all matches, the pattern was set early and the player who managed to get ahead at the start then went on to win the match.

Anne Tait and Sharon Taylor were the stars of the day with a very solid performance throughout. Anne at number 2 won 3/2 and Sharon at number 5 won her match 3/1. Well done to our 2 rookies.

Unfortunately, the team will not be competing in the finals but we are hoping for a strong finish in our last match on 19th June.

Junior Division 2

We played The Vines at the Royal Adelaide Golf Course. This magnificent course was in excellent condition and the weather was perfect for golf. The conditions remained good throughout the day, with warm temperatures and a slight breeze.

First out was Gareth Thien playing at no. 5 against Joshua Lessue. Gareth found himself down on the first 4 holes and it looked like the match was unlikely to go his way.  However, he remained calm, and with consistent play managed to claw his way back to 2-down by the 9th hole, and found himself even by the 11th hole. With a renewed energy and belief he finally achieved his maiden victory on the 17th hole, 3 & 1.

Jayden McGrath played Amberly Bouth at no. 4.  In the first 9, he found himself 2-down, and continued to fight hard to be in the match. Unfortunately he was unable to narrow the margin and he lost 5 & 3.

Holly O’Connell played next, against Aiden Fitzgerald. She was initially down 1-2 strokes but by the turn, the momentum was strong on her opponent’s side. She was unable to close the gap on the second 9, and she went down 4 & 3.

Brandon Van Den Berg played against Ava Strazdins. He had to give away 13 strokes, and whilst he put in his best efforts, could not get ahead and lost 7 & 6.

We welcomed Grace Ferrier’s return to Junior Div 2 today, at no. 1. Despite having to give away 16 strokes, she went out straight off the blocks with solid play. She had 3 birdies on her first 9 and was 2-up. Her opponent Emma Hastie put up a good fight and Grace saw herself with a 1 stroke lead by the 13th hole. She was able to set her nerves aside and emerged victorious 3 & 1.

Overall we lost 3-2 today, however the scores above do not quite reflect the progress of our individual players, who have improved week-on-week. Well done team and thank you to the caddies for all your support. See you recharged in 2 weeks’ time at Tea Tree Gully.
