On Sunday the 28th of December the Owen Whitford Trophy qualifying round was held in conjunction with both the Glenelg Golf Club Mixed Foursomes Championship and the Golf SA Mixed Foursomes Championships. The event was played for the first time since 2019 and competitors came out in full force with 32 pairs participating.
Sunday was a very sunny afternoon with a breeze picking up throughout the afternoon to challenge the players, however we had some very good close scoring. With there being 1.5 shots between 3rd and 1st place nett which was won by Alistair Flynn and Laura Birchmore with a nett 68.5. The top 4 placed in the nett who are available go through to the Semi final match play on Thursday 2nd December and the Final on Friday 3rd December to play for the Owen Whitford Trophy.
The gross scores were also tight with the winners of the SA State Mixed Foursomes Championship Steven Alderson and Anna Watson with a gross 76(+7) managing a two shot victory over Alistair Flynn and Laura Birchmore gross 78(+9).
The Glenelg Golf Club Mixed Foursomes Championship was won by pro shops very own Eliza Baker and golf-aholic Ben Chinner with a score of 80 (+11).
The Semi Final match was between:
- Steven Alderson and Anna Watson vs 4. Geoffrey Watson and Jenny Watson WON on 20th Hole
- Phil Mebberson and Anne Lundberg vs 3. Alex Martinson and Sarah Russell WON 2UP
Both very tight matches on a very windy afternoon at Glenelg. With the winners going through to the final on Friday 3rd December.
Alex Martinson and Sarah Russell managed to grind their way through a tough final hole for both teams to win another close match winning 1 up on the final hole against Geoffrey Watson and Jenny Watson. Congratulations Alex Martinson and Sarah Russell (North Adelaide) for winning the 2021 Owen Whitford Trophy!

OPEN TO AMATEURS & PROFESSIONALS
A Qualifying Round of 18 holes Handicap Stroke Play will be played at Glenelg Golf Club on Sunday 28th November 2021 at 1:30pm (shotgun start) to determine qualifying positions for the Owen Whitford Trophy, with the maximum number of teams to qualify being 4.
Handicap match play will take place over 18 holes on the following days
- Semi Final – Thursday, 2nd December at 3:00pm
- Grand Final – Friday, 3rd December at 1:00pm
- Presentations will follow at approximately 5:30pm.
The Glenelg Golf Club Mixed Foursomes Championship and Golf SA Mixed Foursomes Championship will be played in conjunction with the Qualifying Round on Sunday, 28th November 2021.
Players may choose not to enter the match-play section of the Owen Whitford Trophy but will remain eligible for all trophies presented in the 2021 Golf SA Mixed Foursomes Championship.

- $99 per pair – The Owen Whitford Trophy (Qualifying & Matchplay Event) – Includes entry into Golf SA Mixed Foursomes and Club Mixed Foursomes Championships
- $60 per pair – Golf SA Mixed Foursomes Championship – Includes automatic entry into the Club Mixed Foursomes Championship for Glenelg pairings.
