Blitz Golf 2019 – A Huge Success

Blitz Golf 2019 – A Huge Success

On Sunday 6th January Glenelg Golf Club hosted the second Blitz Golf event for 2019, and what a successful day it was. The short format, one day, knockout ‘blitz’ style of golf is still relatively new in Australia, but is gaining traction quickly as players and fans jump on board to support.

Spectators were very impressed to watch the legendary Ian Baker-Finch tee off and play on Glenelg’s course. Baker-Finch is a very humble and approachable player, who was more than happy to chat to anyone throughout the day and talk through some of his techniques.

Thank you to all the Members and their families who came along to watch and cheer. The atmosphere was amazing and crowd were buzzing, with Golf Australia reporting around 1400 spectators on the day (read the whole Golf Australia article here).

The event attracted people from in and outside of the Club, with a huge number of families and children enjoying the activities on offer. The free junior clinics with the Pros proved very popular, with around 50 taking part and a large portion of these being new to Glenelg. Since Sunday, we have had quite a few enquiries and sign-ups into Junior Golf Memberships and Tiger Cub Clinics as a result of the interactions at Blitz Golf.

The day ran smoothly thanks to the fantastic support from the Blitz event organisers, the PGA, over 30 Club staff, and the volunteers. Everyone’s help was greatly appreciated, from the grounds team setting up an immaculate course, to the kitchen and bar staff keeping everyone well fed and watered.

We had a great range of food and beverage on offer in the hospitality village adjacent to the Clubhouse. More than 200 Wood Oven Pizzas were devoured, as well as several hundred pies, pasties, and Chicken/Fish & Chips. A pop-up bar featuring Asahi, Peroni, Seppeltsfield Gin & Tonic, as well as Incognito Espresso coffee were also enormously popular.

Thanks to the following volunteers for giving up their time to hand out flyers, cart players around between rounds, and lend a hand everywhere needed.

The innovative one day tournament engaged an audience new to golf by introducing players as rock stars by an MC as they ran through smoke machines. Spectators were entertained throughout the day with info from on and off the course while listening to music.

Congratulations to Victrorian, Zach Murray for winning the Blitz Golf Pro comp, and the Amateur comp was taken out by our Club’s own Sam Raschella.

If you captured any great photos on the day, we would love it if you could please share your favourite ones with James james.lorenz@glenelggolf.com
