History of the Queen Sirikit Cup

The Queen Sirikit Cup is also known as the Amateur Ladies Asia-Pacific Invitational Golf Team Championship.  It is very closely intertwined with the Thailand Ladies Golf Association which was registered in February 1979.  Given there was no national team championship, and no international ladies events in the region at the time the Association believed such an event would give ladies the opportunity to play at a higher lever and accomplish more for themselves and their countries.

A proposal was sent to the national golf associations of 13 countries including Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Burma, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand to send a team of 3 players to launch the national team championship in Bangkok.  Of the 14 invited, nine countries attended the inaugural event.

The Thailand Ladies Golf Association requested the challenge trophy from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, naming the trophy in her honour.

The Queen Sirikit Cup was born.  An exact replica of the handcrafted silver trophy is presented to the champion team each year.
