Strong Bonnar win but just miss Final

Report by Wayne Humphries

It was the last round of Bonnar Cup and we needed results to go our way to qualify for the Final.  Our first job was to win our contest against Kooyonga, all the Glenelg boys played well and we came away with a convincing 5 – 2 win: job done.

However we needed North Adelaide to halve or win their match against The Vines at The Vines – and they went oh so close.  The Vines won 4.5 – 2.5 with 5 games going down the 18th.  So, to their credit, The Vines qualified to play The Grange next week in the Final by just half a match.  As it turned out we missed the Final by just one putt – one putt either way in a crucial matches against The Grange and Flagstaff Hill was the difference in making the Final or not.

The Glenelg boys held a slight advantage against Kooyonga for most of the day and the 5 – 2 win was a nice way to finish the season.

At No. 7 James Bridgen had a tight game early and was all square after 8 but went 2 up after 13 and maintained the lead to be 1 up playing the last which he won to record a nice 2 up win.

Jacob Rillotta at No. 6 played very steady golf all day to win 5/4.

At No. 5 Ben Winton was just too solid, an impressive 5 up after 8, he went on to win 6/5.

Andy Humphries at No. 4 recovered from a slow start, he was 2 down after 4 but an eagle 3 on the 5th and some steady golf saw him win 4 holes in a row to be 2 up after 8 and maintained his lead to win 2/1.

Michael Ratajewski at No. 3 continued his strong season to record a 4/3 win.  Rat went through the season undefeated, winning 5 matches and halving 1.

Henry Duregon at No. 2 and Will Starkey at No. 1 both had tough opponents and were down for most of the day.  However both players stuck to their task; Henry had some late birdies to get back to all square after 15, but lost 16 and 17 to lose 2/1.  Will also staged a fightback; he was 3 down after 13, and then won the next 3 holes to square his game after 16.  Still all square playing the last he lost the 18th to lose 1 down.

So, a frustrating end to the season in terms of not making the Final.  I would like to thank all players who played Bonnar this year for the Club.  I was very proud of your effort and commitment to the season, just very unfortunate that the Golfing Gods were not very kind to us this year.

Also a huge thank you to all those that caddied through the season and the handful of Club members that came out to support the team at times.

And finally thank you to the Club for it’s support to the Bonnar team again this year, Club management, the Pro Shop coaching staff and the Pennant Sponsors.  All players were very grateful and appreciative of your support.
