Great finals preparation for Simpson Cup

The Glenelg Simpson Cup team travelled to a perfectly presented Kooyonga Golf Club with a challenge to keep an unbeaten record intact against Tea Tree Gully Golf Club, who were trying win to avoid possible relegation. For our team it could have been very easy to let some complacency set in knowing a finals spot was already achieved. To the boys credit this complacency scenario never eventuated with a comprehensive 6.5 to 0.5 win.

Playing at No. 7 Michael Munn had a tough battle against Nick May. This match never had a bigger advantage to either player of more than 1 hole for the whole game and could have gone either way. In the end a halved match was probably a fitting result.

Anthony Olsen at No. 6 continued on his unbeaten way with a very convincing win. After getting off to a fast start being 3 up after 6 holes Anthony was in complete control to have any early finish with an 8/6 victory.

Josh Hayes our reliable No. 5 had a tough match against experienced opponent, Matt McMahon. With the match being tight for the first 6 holes Josh gained a 4 hole advantage after 9. After losing the next 2 holes Josh steadied to close out his match 2/1.

Jackson Kalz playing at No. 4 against Norm Cordina, a wily older veteran pennant player and all round good person, never found it easy with an eventual 3/2 win. Other than an eagle to win the first, Jackson found the going a bit tough early to still only be 1 up after 9 holes. Getting out to a 2 hole lead after 14 holes, Jackson completed a hard fought 3/2 win.

Playing against his old club, Sam Burton at No. 3 was another of our boys to have a tough match. After gaining a quick 2 hole advantage through 4, Sam found himself 1 down after 9. Being under some pressure and not playing very convincingly Sam ground out a tough 3/1 win showing our never give up attitude and will to win.

Sam Earl at No. 2 although not having his best ball striking day completed a solid 5/4 win. Being 3 up after 9 holes Sam was too steady for Jacin Cook from Tea tree Gully and completed his convincing win.

Lachlan Barker our No. 1, was off to a quick start being 2 holes up after 4, extending out to be 4up after 8. Lachy then put his foot down winning 3 of the next 4 holes to close out his match 7/6.

Our Simpson Cup team have had a fantastic minor round losing only 3 individual matches and 6 matches halved from 49 played.  Although this is an outstanding effort and the job is now done to get the team into the final, the focus is now on next Sunday’s final against Kooyonga at Royal Adelaide Golf Club. My co manager Gary Thompson and myself along with the Golf Operations team and all other team managers are now focused on preparing not only the Simpson Cup team but the Women’s Sanderson Cup, Pike Cup & A4, the Men’s Bonnar Cup team and the Junior Sharp Cup teams in their quest for finals victory. To win all of these events is a distinct possibility and the support of Club members at the various finals would give all players involved a great lift.

Thanks to all of the caddies and supporters who took the time to encourage our boys at Kooyonga. This definitely gives a lift to the players especially when the going is a little tough.
