Pike Cup back to Glenelg in 2017

Report by Joy Green
Team Manager

Congratulations to the 5 wonderful players who led our Pike Cup team to victory against Kooyonga at Royal Adelaide on Sunday.

They were stalwart throughout the season and managed to get us to the final after losing only 3 games of the 25 played.

There were seven players making up the squad for Pike Cup and thanks must be given to the two players that didn’t play in the final, Cathy Symons and Bec Hughes. These two players were there when available to caddy for the others and assist them with their experience, which was greatly appreciated.

The final started on the 14th hole and by the time our No.1 player, Emma Sutton, had teed off the first player was making her way to the 16th green.

I caught up with them as they played through the 16th and found out that three players were up, one square and the other 1 down. Things were going well, I only started to get a little nervous as each player came through the 9th with only 4 holes to play.

Tilly Miels (Caddy, Cathy Johnson) played No. 5 against Penelope Wark and was the first to finish with a 2/1 victory. Tilly still hasn’t played the full course at Royal Adelaide, though this time it was only the 13th that she missed.    Thank you Tilly, you proved your worth throughout the season and I can see a great future in golf for you. Wear your medal with pride.

Louise Pike (Caddy, Heather Waddy) played No. 4 against Deb Alexander. They had a very tight match and after finishing the 12th, Louise was 1 up, so headed off down the 13th hole. I continued to wait at the 12th for the remaining players.

Shakira-Ann Kuys (Caddy, Bec Hughes) played No. 3 against Ann Ewer and led from the start and eventually won 3/1. Thank you Shakira and it was fantastic to now have two wins in the bag. Best wishes to yourself and Tilly in the Brett Ogle championship at Renmark this week.

Following Shakira’s great win, I thought I should see how Louise was doing and so left to go to the 13th green, but everyone was screaming …. ‘WE’VE WON!!!’ Emma had won on the 11th!!!

I followed up to find Louise and she had just finished putting out and had won 2 up. Congratulations Louise and it was fitting that you be able to hold the Pike Cup and I am sure Fiona was close to your thoughts throughout the day.

Samantha White (Caddy, Cathy Symons) played No. 2 against Jodie Pyke and because the game had been won by Glenelg, they declared this match a half. Sam you played strongly throughout the season and recorded only 1 loss. Well done.

Emma Sutton (Caddy, Sarah King) played No. 1 against Jill Trenorden and it was a battle of wills, whenever I caught up with them, they seemed to be winning alternative holes. Emma, cool as a cucumber, didn’t get worn down by Jill, who had holed several long putts. Emma was our clincher but unfortunately, because I was waiting on the 12th, I didn’t see her finish and win on the 11th. Thank you Emma and my apologies also for forgetting to mention in my speech at the dinner, that you leave for College in the US in a few weeks. I am sure you will fit in with your team there as you have here this year. You are an amazing young woman and thank you and Meredith for being there this year. Thanks also Meredith for the amazing brownies!

WooHoo!! We are the champions.
