Elysia Yap has claimed back-to-back Club Championship titles after defeating 14-year old youngster, Charley Jacobs, in a hard fought final today at Glenelg.
After a slow start early to be 3 down through eight holes, Yap used her past experience to slowly claw back her position against the Ardrossan junior to go into the lunch break two holes ahead of Jacobs, after winning holes 15, 16, 17 and 18.
A strong start to the afternoon round saw Yap take a six-hole lead through 27 holes. Despite a gutsy comeback from Jacobs through Glenelg’s “Amen Corner” – winning holes 10 and 11 – Yap grabbed back her earlier momentum and steadied the ship with solid pars on 12 and 13, closing out the match 5/4 on the 32nd hole.
In other matches, Juliet Culley, who only recently joined the Club from Bonnie Doon in Sydney, took out the B Grade Championship with an 8/7 win over Ros Osborn. Emily Hong, a graduate of the Club’s Women’s Try Golf Program, claimed her first C Grade Championship, defeating Club stalwart, Heather Whitford, 4/3. In the C Grade Plate final, Bev Franklin followed up her 2015 title with another solid victory, this time against Rita Niemirowski, winning 7/5.
