Simpson Cup boys hold top position with another win

Glenelg's Josh Hayes

Report by Geoff Attenborough (Team Manager)

Glenelg’s Simpson Cup team continued their good form at Fleurieu Golf Club on Sunday to win their fourth match from four starts, defeating Royal Adelaide 5-2.

Congratulations to Fleurieu Golf Club on the presentation of their golf course. After some heavy rain in the morning and with some greens being virtually unplayable with a lot of surface water, play could have been in doubt. Fortunately, the rain stopped and the greens drained very quickly and produced fast flat surfaces and along with the quick draining fairways – the course was immaculate.

Ben Hallam was our first match to play and was under pressure from the outset being 2 down after three holes. After nine holes, Ben was 4 down and with his opponent playing steady par golf, eventually went down 5/4.

Anthony Olsen continued his good form with an outstanding 7/6 win. Off to a quick start being 3 up after seven holes, extending to be 5 up at the 9th, Anthony won two of the next three holes to have an early finish.

Jackson Kalz playing at no 5 continued on his winning way with a tough win.  After being 2 down after seven holes and seemingly struggling a little, Jackson won three of the next four holes to be 1 up after eleven. Extending his lead to be 3 up after 15 holes, Jackson closed his match out winning 3/1.

Josh Hayes at n o4 also had a tough battle against a determined opponent. After losing the 1st hole then getting back to square after three holes, this match was very tight still being all square after nine. Josh, with his local knowledge of the course, proved too strong on the back nine for his Royal Adelaide opponent eventually going on to win this match 4/3.

Ben Layton playing no 3 had a tough battle all day and it seemed that whoever made the least amount of mistakes would win. Unfortunately, Ben after being 1 up after nine holes seemed to lose his composure and played some errant shots to lose the advantage and be 3 down after 15 holes. After winning the 16th to be 2 down with two to play, Ben could not reduce the deficit any more to go down 2/1.

Sam Earl, after a disappointing loss last week, bounced back with a tough, convincing 6/5 win. With a two hole advantage after seven, extending to be 4 up after nine holes, Sam, playing under par golf, closed out his match with a 6/5 result. Great play in the conditions.

Lachlan Barker rounded out the team win with a solid 3/2 victory. Seeming to be in control of his match early, Lachy’s opponent, after being 3 down after seven holes, would not go away and reduced the deficit to be only 2 down after eight holes. The score stayed the same until Lachy won the the 14th to be 3 up with four to play and eventually complete his 3/2 victory.

The team is now in a strong position with half of the season completed and being unbeaten. With our next match being against Blackwood at Tea Tree Gully, the players are well aware against any complacency setting in as this could undo all of the hard work that has got us into top position.

Again thanks to all of the caddies for their efforts today and also the club supporters for braving the trying cold and windy conditions.
