Juniors claim stunning win to advance to final

Glenelg's Austin Baker in action during the 2014 Boys' Junior Championships

Report by Sam Raschella (Team Manager)

The scenario was simple. With the strong Kooyonga side already in the final, the Glenelg boys needed a win to knock out County District and book their place.

The boys were undisputedly the underdogs going into the match, losing three players from their usual side. This provided Lachy Roberts, Harrison Edwards and Austin Baker with a chance to make Pennant debuts on their home track.

Leading the side out at number 5 was Austin Baker. Austin’s solid hitting and positive attitude proved to be too much for his opponent who plays off a handicap eight shots less than him. Austin won 4&3. A dream debut.

Lachy Roberts played at 4 this week with his opponent playing solid golf. Lachy made an awesome up and down from the green-side trap on the 11th to keep his match alive but it ended a hole later. A great experience for Lachy who is continually improving.

Filling the number 3 spot was Harrison Edwards. After struggling on the range, Harry managed to build his confidence throughout the round by holing some key putts. He rolled on to win his first pennant match after 14 holes.

Mitchell Ward played solid golf battling with his opponent all day but spent the most part of it behind. He managed to claw back several times but succumbed to a 2 down loss. Mitch learned a lot from his match and got to experience pressure at its finest. He will be better for it.

Marcus Kuys was the hero of the day. The outcome of his match was tough to predict with his putter not helping him much. However, his quality ball striking kept him in the contest. Needing to halve the final hole, Marcus faced a ten foot sliding putt for the team to make the final.  Without looking overwhelmed by the situation, he calmly rolled it in.

A massive win for Glenelg who will play on the other side of the airport at Kooyonga in next week’s final.

Playing Kooyonga around their home course will not be easy, but our boys will all carry a lot of belief after this week’s win and give it a great shot.
