Wheare caps stellar year with Open Championship

Seventeen year old Matilda Wheare has capped off a stellar 2014 with victory in the Women’s Open Championship at Glenelg Golf Club on Sunday.

Wheare, who also took out this year’s Girls’ Club Junior Championship, was a member of the Club’s winning Women’s Grade 1 Pennant team and represented South Australia this year in the Junior Interstate series, played consistent and solid golf to defeat close friend and fellow pennant team member, Elysia Yap, in a tight match stretching across 33 holes.

Wheare jumped out of the blocks early to be four up on Yap early, however Yap fought back to close the gap to be only one down at lunch.

Wheare once again showed confidence beyond her years to climb to a four hole advantage early in the second round and was able to maintain her lead over Yap for much of the remaining match.  A spirited fight back by Yap late in the round saw the match continue well into the back nine, however Wheare was able to steady herself when required and eventually took out the title on the 33rd (15th) hole.
