Lorry & Neil Brown win Owen Whitford Trophy

Blackwood Golf Club's Lorry & Neil Brown - the 2014 Owen Whitford Trophy championsIt may have taken 20 years , but Blackwood Golf Club’s Lorry & Neil Brown have finally taken out the Owen Whitford Open Mixed Foursomes Championship with victory today in the final against Glenelg’s Janet & Mark Fleer.

The Brown’s have famously participated in the event every year since its inception in 1995 and have come close on many occasions.  However, in what was a marathon effort today, they finally tasted success, defeating the event sponsors on the 22nd hole of a tightly fought matchplay final.

The Fleers were up early in the match, but a spirited fightback from the Blackwood husband & wife pairing saw the match finish all square after regular time, and forcing the match into extra time.

A small crowd followed the pairings as they battled their way around an additional four holes before eventually seeing the deadlock broken when Neil holed a lengthy putt for par on the 4th to win the hole and the championship.

Whitford family representative, Chris Whitford, was present for the presentations and spoke highly of his father, Owen, and the contribution he and other family members had made to the Club over the many years of association with Glenelg.  He also thanked event sponsors, and runners-up, Janet & Mark Fleer, for their ongoing support of this popular event.
