Chant & Yap top Championship qualifying

Connor Chant has put together two solid rounds in the 2014 Men’s Club Championship qualifying to take out the RF Stevens Trophy (leading qualifier) and head into the matchplay rounds at the top of the tree.

Tied for the lead with Campbell Rawson after the morning round with a solid 72, Chant fired an even-par 71 in the tough afternoon conditions to qualify first by a comfortable five shot margin. Will Starkey finished in second place with rounds of 75, 73, while Campbell Rawson is well placed to defend his 2013 Club Championship trophy after rounds of 72, 77.

13-year old Liam Kennewell continues to impress, firing the low round of the day with a one-under par 70 in the afternoon, following 81 in the morning to qualify in fourth place. The ever-reliable Leigh Attenborough finished in fifth ahead of the best 7 handicapper at the Club, Brian Welsh. James McDonald was less than impressed with his rounds of 83, 78, but has put himself in the mix, qualifying 7th. Braeden Kelly and Ben Magi were forced to play extra holes to decide 8th spot, with Kelly making a birdie up the long par-3 3rd hole to finalise the top 8 qualifiers.
