Glenelg has used its home course advantage to take out the 2014 Rhonda Watson Brooch with a comprehensive victory in today’s 18 hole silver teams event.
The team, comprising three of Glenelg’s best young female golfers, Jenny Lee, Elysia Yap and Matilda Wheare, took out the Brooch for a second consecutive year, firing a total score of 242 to win by a staggering 29 shots from runners up, Kooyonga, whose team comprised Deb Percy, Lyn McGough and Lisa Brien.
Lee shot the round of the day, a 3-over 75 around the women’s par 72 championship layout, with Yap shooting an 83 and Wheare recording an 84. McGough was the best of the visiting players firing a 86, with Blackwood’s Angela Masters rounding out the top five scores with an 87.
Naracoorte Golf Club, made up of players Di McCully, Jane Allen and Helen Cox, took out the net event with a combined total of 243, five shots ahead of the Blackwood team of Masters, Paula White and Sally Graham.
Sue Tuohy, daughter of Rhonda Watson, was once again in attendance to assist with the presentation of the trophy.

About Rhonda Watson OAM
Rhonda joined Glenelg Golf Club in 1948 as a Junior member and in 1951 commenced her first year of 26 years playing for the Club in Pennant competitions.
She remains a member today and the family tradition continues. Rhonda’s daughter Sue Tuohy, and grandson Ben Tuohy, are both members of Glenelg’s successful Pennant teams and active members of the Club.
Rhonda won 12 State Championships and 13 Club Championships.
In 1959, Rhonda was the first lady to obtain a scratch handicap in South Australia.
Rhonda represented South Australia for many years as part of the State team and in 1962 and 1966 she was selected to represent Australia in the Tasman Cup Team.
In 1968, she won a Gold Laurel Wreath Brooch for playing par golf at Glenelg and in 1969, won the Champion of Champions trophy.
In 1970, Rhonda was non-playing captain of the Australia Tasman Cup team.
Rhonda has been involved in the administration of women’s golf at a club, state and national level on various committees.

- Life Membership of the South Australia Ladies Golf Union
- OAM in 1978 for her services to golf
- Inaugural inductee into the SA Golf Industry Hall of Fame in 2011
