Glenelg’s Grade 1 women’s pennant team has started their title defence in the best possible way with a 3.5-1.5 victory over the host club, Blackwood.
Jenny Lee, the current number one ranked player in SA, lead the team out at number one and unsurprisingly performed well being 3-under after nine holes before her opponent was forced to forfeit the match due to injury. Elysia Yap played consistently against former Glenelg team mate, Christine Beasley, and did enough to take the win 4/3 whilst experienced campaigner, Jill Hodge, played in the number three position, fighting all day against an old foe, finally squaring her match up the 18th hole.
Debutante, Sarah Griffiths, made the most of her promotion into the top grade competition taking out her first win. Sarah took some time to get going, and after being 3 down at one stage, fought her way back in the nick of time to take the win on the 17th hole.
Jess Burns, a last minute inclusion after the withdrawal of Matilda Wheare due to injury, played the experienced Lorry Brown on her home course, losing 3/2.
A great start to the season for the girls, and after a week hiatus for the long-weekend, we look forward to getting back into it at The Grange Golf Club on the 15th June. Thanks to all the caddies and members for coming up to Blackwood to support the girls in their first match.
