Solid home win for Glenelg’s Simpson Cup side

Report by Geoff Attenborough
Team Manager

Glenelg’s Simpson Cup side had a tough day playing at home against a determined Royal Adelaide, eventually winning 4 matches to 3 in cold windy conditions.

After a wet week, the golf course was presented in superb condition and is a credit to Daryl Sellar and his course maintenance team.

Our first match out playing at number seven had Sam Raschella playing only his second Simpson Cup match for the club, but unfortunately Sam had a day he would probably like to forget, being soundly beaten 8/6. Sam has a lot of ability, but on the day, just did not seem to be switched on for the job at hand.

Playing at six was our ever reliable Leigh Attenborough who continued on his unbeaten run this season wearing his opponent down to win 3/2.

David Hiern, at number five, did a very good job for the team this week to win 2/1. David was in some doubt during the week with a back complaint, but with some intense physio and showing plenty of ticker, he got the job done.

Josh Hayes, playing four, was just off his game today losing to a determined opponent 2 down.  This match could have gone either way with Josh being up three holes early in the match, then losing three holes in a row and from then on he battled to get the ascendency. Josh, I am sure, will be keen to redeem next week against Blackwood.

Connor Chant at number three did not have a good day losing 4/3. Connor made some basic errors during his match, which is most unusual, as he is very methodical with his game and I feel sure he will bounce back next week.

Campbell Rawson at two had a tough battle most of the match being two down early.  Campbell showed his fighting spirit to get back to square after 12 holes and then show his domination to go on and win 3/2.

Our number one, Matt Overall, had a similar match to Campbell, being a couple of holes down early but like Cambell, he fought back and gained the ascendancy showing his class to close out the win 4/3.

Our Simpson Cup team still have a very faint chance to get into the final, but being realistic we really need to finish the season on a high with a strong performance against Blackwood next week at Royal Adelaide. A strong win in this match would see us finish probably in 3rd position and with some injuries and sickness this season and loss of players from last year, the team has performed very creditably.
