Glenelg’s Sharp Cup side showed they are going to be ultra competitive in 2014 by beating the much fancied Southern Group combined team 3 matches to 2 in their opening Sharp Cup round at Kooyonga on Sunday.
Jack Tanner tee’d off at number five and lead comfortably for most of the day before his opponent edged back to be even going down the last. Jack held his nerve to win the 18th and post our first match for the season.
Hyoyi Pyun debuted at number four with her match swinging to and fro all day. Hyoyi found herself 2 down with three to play, but birdie opportunities at 16 and 17 were good enough to also force the match down to the 18th. Unfortunately this time, Southern took the hole and the match to square the contest.
Liam Kennewell was next to finish playing solid match play golf at number two to be 4 up after nine and was never challenged, bringing home our second match with a very comfortable 6/4 win.
Jackson Kalz’s pennant debut was equally impressive forging to a three hole lead by the turn. His opponent clawed back to within one before Jackson piled on the pressure as he had been doing all day with straight drives and solid putting, finishing off his opponent with pars on 15th and 16th to seal the match and the contest for Glenelg.
Jack Hynes, playing at number one, found his opponent too strong for the day losing 6/5. But this did not matter as the young team supported, by our future stars, Aaron and Jack Buchanan, celebrated their first victory for 2014.
