Big victory for Simpson Cup side in round 5

Glenelg’s Simpson Cup team ventured to Kooyonga Golf Club on Sunday for a most important match against Highercombe. The team knew the importance of this match and came to play with a strong willed and positive attitude to get the job done and followed through with a very sound 6 matches to 1 win.

Henry Duregon was our first match out and had a tough battle with his opponent all day. Henry did not get off to the best start being 2 down after three holes – this is becoming a regular pattern in the start of his matches and puts him on the back foot early. Henry got back to square with eight holes to play but could not keep the momentum going to fall to 2 down with two to play.  To his credit, he won the 17th hole to be 1 down with one to play and was in the box seat to win the last but unfortunately did not count on his opponent making a most unlikely par to lose 1 down.

Leigh Attenborough playing at number six went on his merry way to win his fifth match in a row this season, but had to battle in the last few holes. After being 5 up with five to play, Leigh was in a position to win at least 5/4 but did not count on himself three putting and his opposite number holing a difficult ten foot putt to extend the match. With four holes to play, Leigh’s opponent hit his tee shot over the back of the short par three and Leigh, being 20 feet from the hole, was in the box seat to close out the match but another three putt meant the match extended further. Leigh eventually wore down his opponent to win 3/2.

David Hiern had a strong win outplaying his opponent to win 7/5. David was in control most of his match and even though, by his own admission, he did not play as well as he can, it was a very good result for the team with two matches to play and our hopes of a finals berth not yet out of the equation.

Josh Hayes was next to play and the youngest member of the team had a tough battle all day.  Josh hit the ball really well from tee to green but had a battle with the putter. If the putter had been working, Josh could probably have won 6/5. The young fella is working really hard on his game and just rewards are just around the corner. Well played Josh.

Connor Chant, at number three, completely outplayed his opposite number winning convincingly 7/5. Connor, after being bitterly disappointed at losing last week, played some exceptional golf on a difficult day to complete his win. For a new, young player at Glenelg, Connor has become a very important member of this team.

Our number two, Campbell Rawson, had a day of ups and downs being on top most of the day, but late in the match let his opponent in to have a chance of getting out with a half. With Campbell being 5 up with five to play and the match seemingly over, a couple of errant shots sent the contest to the 17th hole with Campbell winning against a stubborn opponent 2/1.

Matt Overall, promoted to the number one position this week, played very well to win 3/2.  Matt, with his quiet and laconic nothing worries him type attitude played great golf to give the team the result we required to give us a small window of opportunity, and I must stress, a small window, for us to get a berth in the final. Matt had a lot of pressure on him today and handled it with ease to put the team in a position to control their own destiny with two matches to go.

As stated, our season is in the hands of the players, but with the attitude and commitment  the team is showing, Glenelg Golf Club can be assured the season is not over until we have no possible mathematical chance of being out of the contest.

Thanks today for all the supporters and caddies that attended at Kooyonga it is most appreciated by all the players.
