Glenelg’s Jenny Lee has taken out the 2014 Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship today in a sudden death playoff at Belmont Golf Club in NSW.
The day started with Hannah Green from Western Australia holding a three shot lead over Lee. Both players had bogey free front nines but Lee made three birdies to Green’s one to cut the deficit to one stroke heading into the back nine. Green shot two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine and Lee fired two birdies and a bogey to be all square after 18 holes.
A sudden death play-off over holes 10, 11 and 12 would decide the winner. The 10th was halved. On the 11th, Lee hit her approach pin high about 20 feet to the right and Green was long through the green but chipped to within centimetres. Lee calmly drained her birdie put to clinch the title.
Kelli Bowers from the US equalled Lee’s three under 70 to finish equal third with Charlotte Thomas from Singapore who shot one under, with the two Spanish players, Escuriola and Sobron two shots behind in equal fifth place.
Glenelg’s other participant, Elysia Yap, played consistent golf with rounds of 75, 79, 79, 74 for a four-round total of 307 to finish 15th.
