Disappointment for Juniors in pennant final loss

Glenelg’s junior pennant side suffered a disappointing 3.5-1.5 loss to Kooyonga in the Sharp Cup pennant final at Glenelg on Sunday.

Despite the luxury of playing at home, our boys were unable to capitalise and Kooyonga took the early advantage from the first match and looked in control for most of the day.  A spirited fight back late in the afternoon from Jack Hynes and Todd Williams was not enough to get the boys over the line and ultimately were defeated by a stronger side on the day.

Haydn Booth starred for Glenelg with a 5&3 thrashing of former Glenelg member, Jake Hurst, who recently moved to Kooyonga after a couple of years at the Bay.  However, Boothy’s efforts were not enough to turn around the result, and after Sam Williams and Liam Kennewell lost their matches early on, the end was nigh for the boys.

However, Jack Hynes was down and out early but fought back from a couple down through 13 holes to get his match back to square after 15 holes (7th hole).  However, as Jack was preparing for his tee shot across the road on the 8th hole, Todd Williams was coming up the last with an opportunity to take his match into extra time.  The pressure was on for the two remaining games with both needing victory, but after Toddy got caught out with a slippery across-green putt, his opponent calmly two putted to halve the hole, win his match and take to Sharp Cup title for Kooyonga.

Despite the disappointing result, the boys still performed extremely well to reach the final and should be very proud of the way they represented themselves and the Club during the competition.
