In a tight match that came down to the last hole of the last match, Glenelg’s group of youngsters took out the 2012 Women’s Grade 1 Pennant Final, defeating Royal Adelaide on their home track yesterday.
My congratulations to this team: a FANTASTIC SEASON, concluding with a tense 3/2 win over Royal Adelaide – the pennant winners for 2010 and 2011.
Three matches went to the 18th – the 4th hole, teams teed off from the 5th.
Christine Beasley was the first winner in, her powerful hitting set up an early 1 up lead. Christine held onto this lead for her last 8 holes – an unwavering effort against Megan Bleeze, the Women’s State Captain.
Elysia Yap played her best golf of the season against the very experienced pennant player Juliet Hugo . Elysia’s long drives and accurate approaches resulted in a well deserved 3/2 win.
Amy Zhou, at number 2, played the very competitive Jovanna Bozanic. Both players were evenly matched, hitting long drives off the tee. The match finished at the 18th, with Amy just 1 down.
Unfortunately for Sophie James, her opponent Fiona Morrison started strongly, sinking some long puts to gain an early lead, and continued putting accurately, not allowing Sophie to get into the game.
Jenny Lee, at number 1, played match winning golf over her last three holes against Caitlin Roberts. After a very even match, Jenny one up playing her last hole, parred her 18th – her approach to the green and superb 8 metre setting up her 2 up win, to the delight of the many Glenelg spectators.
Thanks to the caddies, Joy Green, Jane Zhang, Kay Nyland, Josie Hodge and Jill Hodge.
I have enjoyed managing this team, and have seen our young players develop as a team of match winners.
