Another strong field of 120 plus players converged from around South Australia to compete in the 2015 Governor’s Legacy Cup final at Glenelg today.<\/p>\n

In good weather, many of the field enjoyed their first opportunity to play the Glenelg course and were not disappointed with the course presented in outstanding condition, despite the recent wet wintery weather.<\/p>\n

The winner, with an amazing score of 42 points, was Keith Plummer from Kooyonga Golf Club, who also celebrated a delightful hole in one on the 16th.\u00a0 Runner up on 39 points was Murray Bridge’s Trevor Jones.<\/p>\n

Also celebrating a one shotter was Pinnaroo’s Barry Atze, who holed out on the 11th hole for the second ace for the day.<\/p>\n

About the Governor’s Cup<\/h2>\n

In 1949, the late Laurie Johnston and Frank Lewis, both Legatees, approached Sir Willoughby Norrie, the Governor of South Australia, seeking support for an annual golf competition. The Governor readily agreed to support Legacy in their efforts to raise funds and also provided a trophy – “The Governor’s Legacy Golf Cup”<\/p>\n

The Glenelg Golf Club was also invited to offer their facilities in support of Legacy and the final has been played at the Club ever since.<\/p>\n

Mr Laurie Johnstone became the first Chairman of Legacy’s Golf Committee – a position he held until his death in 1979, completing 30 years of service.<\/p>\n

The Governor’s Legacy Golf Day is the final of the annual competition and over a number of weeks some 2,000 golfers from some 100 golf clubs around South Australia have sought to win a place in the final at Glenelg.<\/p>\n

Funds raised for Legacy in 1949 totalled 805 pounds. Over the years, the total amount has steadily increased, to the extent that over $1 million has been received from Golf activities in the past 60 years for Legacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
