{"id":3701,"date":"2015-04-17T12:00:26","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T02:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glenelggolf.com\/cms\/?p=3701"},"modified":"2023-06-20T15:44:22","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T06:14:22","slug":"anzac-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glenelggolf.com\/cms\/2015\/04\/anzac-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Anzac Day at Glenelg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2gemOMw5KO4\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.glenelggolf.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/Dining__Functions\/Anzac-Day-Image-250-High.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"104\" \/>In honour of our diggers, Josh Chenoweth, the nephew of our Clubhouse Operations Manager, Martin Ardill, performed The Last Post on Anzac Day at 11:00am.<\/p>\n<p>Josh is currently employed as a casual glassy and kitchenhand and attends Westminster College under a music scholarship.\u00a0 Rob Chenoweth, his father, is a highly accredited music teacher and well respected trumpet player himself, having played with Shirley Bassey, Jerry Lewis and Ray Charles to name a few: Josh\u2019s future looks bright.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The playing of the Last Post has become a new tradition at the Club and, as a tribute, play was suspended for the duration of the anthem for all to pause and salute our ANZACs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><em>They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:<br \/>\nAge shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.<br \/>\nAt the going down of the sun and in the morning,<br \/>\nWe will remember them.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">History of the Anzac Trophy<\/h2>\n<p>The Anzac Trophy was first played at Glenelg Golf Club in 1937.\u00a0 The British General Electric Co. Pty. Ltd., per the manager, Mr D H Charlick, donated the cup in 1947 as a permanent trophy for the Club&#8217;s Anzac Trophy competition.<\/p>\n<p>From 1951 to 1961, the Anzac Trophy was played in two divisions; World War I and World War II. The individual winner of each division was recorded in the Annual Report; the overall winner (best score for the day) being written on the clubhouse honour board as the Anzac Trophy winner.\u00a0 During this period only one World War I veteran won the overall competition.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995, it was suggested that the Anzac Trophy, given the declining number of Anzac veterans, be played as a Club event on a Saturday to ensure its continuity. The Anzac Trophy committee announced the cessation of the event in its current format shortly afterwards and, from 1998, the Anzac Trophy was played in conjunction with the Anzac Memorial Trophy on the Saturday of or prior to Anzac Day each year.\u00a0 In 2006, the Anzac Trophy and the Anzac Memorial Trophy were combined to be played as the Anzac Memorial Trophy, which continues to be played on the Saturday on or prior to Anzac Day each year, and open to all members playing on the day.<\/p>\n<h3>Recent Anzac Memorial Trophy Winners<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2015 &#8211; Ian Mather<br \/>\n<\/strong>2014 &#8211; David Marshall<br \/>\n2013 &#8211; Phil Noblet<br \/>\n2012 &#8211; Michael Pope<br \/>\n2011 &#8211; John Noble<br \/>\n2010 &#8211; Kym Smith<br \/>\n2009 &#8211; Peter Astill<br \/>\n2008 &#8211; Darryl Burns<br \/>\n2007 &#8211; David Allen<br \/>\n2006 &#8211; Ben Prisk<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VYWanq6AHtc\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Anzac Memorial Tree<\/h2>\n<p>Adjacent to the 10th tee, a plaque beneath the Anzac Memorial Tree reads the following:<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotation\"><em>Lone Pine Ridge was the scene of one of the bloodiest and most successful battles of the Gallipoli Campaign. It has become a legend of the Australian nation. 3,000 of the 4,600 Australians involved were killed. Seven won the Victoria Cross.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"quotation\"><em>This Aleppo Pine was grown from a seed directly related to the pine on that ridge. It was presented to the Club by the Anzac Trophy Committee and planted on Anzac Day 1997.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli, the Club has commenced a restoration project for the Anzac Memorial Tree and surrounding environs.<\/p>\n<p>New landscaping is being introduced to the area including irrigated turf to better reflect the Lone Pine Memorial on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and the minor relocation of the Anzac Memorial Seat.<\/p>\n<p>The tree itself will be pruned at the lower levels to prevent it inhibiting play on the 10th hole and seeds will be collected from the tree and propagated into new seedlings for use in other areas of the golf course to ensure the continuity of this tradition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honour of our diggers, Josh Chenoweth will be performing The Last Post on Anzac Day at 11:00am by the flag poles at the porte cochere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":8286,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[385,386],"class_list":["post-3701","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guests-news","tag-anzac-day","tag-anzac-trophy"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
