\"\"Members and guests are invited to attend our end of year Captain’s Lunch for 2012 on Friday, 7th<\/sup> December.<\/p>\n

Lunch will be complimented by Rockford Wines commencing at 12:30pm with The Captain\u2019s Challenge teeing off at 7:30am (shotgun start) for those interested in a round of golf beforehand.<\/p>\n

The cost for the lunch will be $99 per head, or $900 for a table of 10 when paid upfront and in full. Golf is optional and at a discounted green fee of $40 (no green fee for members).<\/p>\n

The event will be hosted by Glenelg Club Captain Tony Martin, with Guest Speaker Robert O\u2019Callaghan, an international wine icon, celebrated Winemaker (Rockford Wines) and golf enthusiast.<\/p>\n

Robert was born into a family of grape growers and grew up in vineyards and wineries, where he inherited a great respect for the pioneer Australian wine trade. All that he has experienced is reflected in the Rockford winemaking principles; Robert says \u201cQuality winemaking is a skilled craft that consumes a very large part of one\u2019s life, so it must give you joy. That joy is extended if the maker can sell the wine directly to those who drink it for their pleasure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In 1971 Robert purchased an 1850\u2019s stone settler\u2019s cottage and outbuildings on five acres of land in the village of Krondorf, which sits in the shadow of the Barossa Ranges, in the heart of the Barossa Valley.\u00a0 The courtyard shaped winery which grew from this was built in the same style and from the same materials as the original buildings. The vintage shed is equipped with plant from the pioneer era, collected when they were discarded by other Australian wineries as they modernised.\u00a0 This allows Rockford to carry on the traditional Australian winemaking techniques, but more importantly the winery is the same scale, age and pace as their growers\u2019 vineyards.<\/em><\/p>\n

To Robert, the winery is not just a building but a large piece of sculpture with Barossa wine running through its veins. Robert says \u201cWine is crafted, not created.\u00a0 The skill is to capture and enhance the fleeting flavours that grapes give from their variety and extract from the earth,\u00a0then bottle these as a living record of the vintage they represent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
