Report by Michael Noble (Team Manager)<\/strong><\/p>\nAnother bad weather day greeted us at Grange on Sunday. A cold morning followed by soaking rain for two hours was most inhospitable.<\/p>\n
We welcomed Sam Hynes to the team for his first game in Simpson Cup. He earned his call up with good performances in the Bonnar Cup side.<\/p>\n
We were to play the reigning Simpson Cup Champions who also sat on top of the table this year as well. A tough assignment.<\/p>\n
All players started well and through the first six holes were very competitive. From there though the Gully boys started to show their class. Their shot selections, chipping and putting were terrific. They are a very professional outfit and went to an unassailable lead after 13 holes.<\/p>\n
Lachlan Booth, Andrew Grzybowski\u00a0and Mitch Nash all went down by the 15th hole, while Anthony Olsen, fighting hard as usual, lost 3\/2 to Brett Crosby. When Ben Magi was defeated 3\/1, the day was lost.<\/p>\n
Sam Hynes, playing at number six played very well and was unfortunate to see his opponent hole a six footer on the 18th green to square the match. A great first up effort.<\/p>\n
Matt McGowan\u2019s performance at number one was outstanding. A 3\/2 victory over a former state champion was full of merit and some fine golf. The final result, Glenelg losing 1.5 games to 5.5 games.<\/p>\n
With two games remaining we are a little behind where we wanted to be, but both the remaining games are winnable. Our boys are looking forward to the challenge and we will see you all at Kooyonga on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Bonnar Cup – Round 5<\/h2>\n
Sunday, 17th June 2012<\/strong>
Glenelg vs Grange at Royal Adelaide Golf Club<\/strong><\/p>\nGlenelg 2 lost to Grange 5<\/strong><\/p>\nA tough match against a strong undefeated Grange side.<\/p>\n
Another cold day with passing showers and a fresh westerly breeze blowing.<\/p>\n
The 5\/2 loss was a disappointing result but all the Glenelg players tried hard, having to combat not only some quality opponents but also the cold, wet conditions. A finals berth is now out of the question – the challenge is now there to win our last 2 matches and finish in 3rd spot.<\/p>\n
Our 2 victories came from Mark McDonald (at No 3) and Mat Mudford (at No 2). Mark played very solidly and was on top of his short game to win 3\/2. A terrific result Mark and really well done. A good follow up performance from your win in the previous round.<\/p>\n
Mat Mudford is a newcomer to the club and performed very well in his debut match for the club \u2013 he messed up the (par 3) 7th<\/sup> hole to go one down after 16 holes but then birdied the 8th<\/sup> to get square and then playing the last hole (the 9th<\/sup> at RA) Mat hit driver, then driver off the deck for his second shot to within 5 metres of the green in to the wind which set up a win on the hole for a 1up win. Congratulations Mat on a great debut.<\/p>\nSam Laslett (at No 4) had a competitive game but finally succumbed at the 17th<\/sup> to lose 2\/1.<\/p>\nOther results were as follows:<\/p>\n
James Brown (at No 1) lost 4\/3<\/p>\n
John Noble (at No 5) lost 4\/3<\/p>\n
Marty Ardill (at No 6) lost 8\/6<\/p>\n
Henry Duregon (at No 7) lost 4\/3<\/p>\n
Congratulations to their opponents who all had solid wins \u2013 it was very noticeable from the sidelines that these Grange players played steady golf and had an amazing ability to get up and down from all sorts of places and being able to hole crucial putts when it really counted \u2013 something that we will need to continue to work on for next year.<\/p>\n
