Simpson Cup Report – Round 4 – Sun 28 May 2023

Glenelg 5 ½ def Thaxted Park 1 ½ at Flagstaff Hill

We were greeted with very gloomy conditions on our arrival at Flagstaff Hill with steady rain and a very damp course.  The early matches were underway but reports were coming through of some flooded areas putting the day’s matches in doubt.  However the skies slowly cleared and by the time we hit off at 12.10pm the rain had largely passed and did not return for the rest of the day making for reasonably good conditions for golf.

Zac Bray came into the team after strong Bonnar Cup performances to play at his former home course.  In another strong performance we did not lose any matches winning 4 and halving the other 3 (which, with a bit of lack on the last green could have all been wins).

Mick Phillips was out first at no. 7 against Lachlan Dash.  The match was close all day and after 11 it was all square.  Mick got in front to be 1 up going down the last but an unfortunate lip out and subsequent bogey resulted in a halved match.

Michael Munn got off to a flyer in his match against Matt Hey to be 3 up after 4.  That score was maintained through 11 which sparked his opponent into action.  After 17 the match was back to square.  Safely on the par 5 last for 3 Michael’s birdie putt stopped on the edge of the hole and he had to settle for a par which his opponent was able to match to secure the half.

At no. 5 Zac Bray was off to a steady start against Jamie Trezise to be square after 4.  From there he went on a five birdie blitz using all of his local knowledge racing away to record a strong 5/3 win.

Matt Uebergang was involved in a tight match against Pacey Lyall.  He was 1 down at the turn but lost the 10th to go 2 down.  A win on the short par 4 11th got the momentum back and by the 15th the match was square.  Another win got him to 1 up going down the last but an errant drive set up an awkward punch shot for his 3rdto the back of the green. He was unable to get up and down and the match was halved.

In the no. 3 position Harry Burner kept up his winning ways in his match against Lachlan Oakes.  He was quickly out to a 3 up lead and although the margin fluctuated for the rest of the day the result was never in doubt with Harry winning the match on the 16th 4/2.  Harry remains undefeated after 4 matches.

Kade Bryant was up against another youngster in Josh Dash.  There was nothing in it on the front 9 and after 10 holes the match was all square.  Kade then hit a couple hurdles losing two of the next 3 holes to slip 2 down, something of an unfamiliar position for him this season.  He then managed to win 3 of the next 4 holes to head down the last 1 up.  A regulation par on 18 secured a 1 up victory keeping his unbeaten run intact.

And finally at no. 1 Jack Buchanan put on another strong performance against Ben Pearce.  Ben holed several good putts early including an eagle on the 4th to Jack’s birdie but in the end he was unable to hang on and Jack pulled away to record a comfortable 5/3 win.  We only have Jack for one more game before he heads to America for some of the big amateur tournaments.

This was another pleasing and important win for the team.  A 3 – 1 record leaves us well positioned in our push towards the semi-finals, now tied with Tea Tree Gully and just behind Kooyonga and Royal Adelaide who remain undefeated.

Thanks to the caddies David Brand, Glenn Sterrey, Adam Bryant, Emma Sutton, Marco Rossman and Jason Bray.  Thanks also to the hardy souls who came out to support us including Eliza Baker, Tash Bryant the Buchanans and the Brays.

Next week we are playing Flagstaff Hill at Tea Tree Gully from 12.10 pm.

Sanderson Cup

In what can be best described as a totally atrocious day of weather at Blackwood Golf Club, our match against RAGC was abandoned, so the whole event was squared.

Christine Trimmer and Bec Hardy were well up and Sarah Crocker, Zoe Manton and Eliza Baker were only just down, so we were looking hopeful for a win.

It was so lovely to have Eliza back in the team.

We were well supported by Chris and Elsie Crocker who looked gorgeous in her cute Glenelg beanie that her clever mother had made( in her spare time !)

Thanks also to our current Ladies Captain Jo Ricourt, for coming to watch the girls in the wind and rain.

Thanks again to the caddies and particularly Fiona Eblen for caddying for Sarah again.

Bonnar Cup

Glenelg v. Royal Adelaide @ Glenelg

Hosting 3rd placed RA was always going to be a great challenge for the Bonnar team and the boys rose to the occasion again.

A 7:30 start on a cool autumn morning, we were determined to make the most of our home track advantage early and did so.

Jame Bridgen, returning to the team, played well and finished early with a 6&5 win.

Matt Jacquier, Harry Edwards and Will Starkey then followed on with great performances winning 1Up, 4&3 and 3&1 respectively.

Ben Winton then contributed with a 5th win of the day in a hard fought 2 up victory.

Max Jericho also fought hard to eventually go down 3&2 to a quality opponent.

Finally, Nick Wake used all of his experience to win the 18th to finish square as the forecast rain began to tumble down.

Another great 51/2 matches to 11/2 win for the group was then capped off with an extended post match balcony review in which many great ideas for the rest of the season were discussed.

Bonnar stand as the only undefeated team in the 2023 competition and meet the 2nd placed TTG at Kooyonga next Sunday in what should be another challenging fixture hitting off the 1st at 12:05.

Thanks as always to the caddies James Mattsson, Dave Rosie, Leanne Edwards, Gus Heffernan, Keith Barnard and all those who came out to support.

Pennant Report for Pike Cup 28th May 2023

Unfortunately Tea Tree Gully forfeited to Glenelg after torrential rain forced a rain delay in play.

Glenelg were up in all matches when play was suspended.

Louise Pike was 3 up after 3 holes, Sam White was 2 up after 3holes with a superb shot into the 3rd finishing eighteen inches from the hole.  Bec Hughes was 1 up after 3 holes and Jill also started well to be 3 up after 3 holes.  Maiya was 1 up after 2 holes.

Thanks to all the caddies who endured the awful conditions.  You all deserve a medal.

Next week’s round at Kooyonga Golf Club against Kooyonga will be a tough match.

Sharp Cup Report – Round 2 – Sunday 28th of May

Glenelg 3 defeated Grange 2 at Willunga GC

On Sunday we made the trek south to Willunga GC to take on Grange.  Conditions were rainy when we arrived and through the match we continued to experience wet conditions interspersed with some greatly appreciated sunshine.  Despite the rain the course maintained good condition, with the fairways and greens playing well.

Hadyn Ryan, Sharp Cup team manager for the previous 2 seasons, addressed the team pre-match with some excellent insights into course management. Careful club selection off the tee on some of the tight Willunga fairways (especially early on) was invaluable advice!

First out was Grace Ferrier at no.5, playing against Mason Holden.  Grace found herself on the back foot early, down 2 after 3 holes.  However, she fought back to be 1 down, with that margin maintained through the turn.  After 12 she had dropped to 3 down, then despite getting it back to 2 down Grace was unable to reduce that margin, falling 3 and 2 after a loss on the 16th.  A great effort in her second Sharp Cup match and edging closer to a maiden victory.

Next up we had Indie Danger at no.4, going against Sam Van der Vlies.  Indie started solidly and after 3, he was 1 up in the match.  His opponent managed to square things up after 6 and at the turn, Indie found himself 1 down in the match.  The momentum had well and truly swung in his opponent’s favour and despite battling hard Indie slid to 4 down after 12.  Indie refused to give up and was able to get one back, alas it was not enough, with his opponent closing out on 16 with the match ending 3 and 2.

At no.3 we had Anthony Wang taking on Elyse Kozlovic.  Anthony got off to a flyer, winning the first 3 holes of the match.  The margin hovered between 2 and 3 holes for the next 12 holes.  Like the previous two matches, this one also concluded on the 16th, however Anthony made it a win for Glenelg, winning the hole and the match with a score of 3 and 2.  Wangers said after the match “I did the exact opposite of Haydn’s advice, but he was right, there were a lot of holes I shouldn’t have hit driver”.  An amusing acknowledgement from Wangers, despite persisting with the all-out attack strategy off the tee!

We welcomed Fletch Ryan back to the team, bolstering our line-up and playing as our no.2 against Alex Cappelluti.  Fletch’s game was highlighted by his temperament and constant steady play, which put his opponent under pressure throughout the round.  Fletch controlled the match and was up 3 after 12 holes.  On 14, Fletch dropped the hammer, with a great tee shot onto the par 3 green to about 8 feet.  He sank the birdie to move 4 up.  On 15, he sealed the match, winning 5 and 3.

Once again we had Jack Leonard at no.1, a position he relishes.  This week Jack’s opponent was Hunter Whetstone.  Much like Fletch’s match, Jack also controlled his match from start to finish, with smart sensible play proving too much for Hunter, who was unable to keep up with Jack as the game wore on.  The highlight of the day was Jack’s approach on 11, with him holing out for eagle from 98 metres.  It was a brilliant shot that pitched about 2 feet from the hole, took a short skip and rolled gently into the hole.  That took Jack to 3 up and with the writing on the wall, Jack won 2 of the next 3 to close out the match at 5 and 4.

Thanks to the caddies – Haydn Ryan and Adam Wang – your support is greatly appreciated.

Next week we head to Royal Adelaide to take on Kooyonga, with an 8.05am starting tee time.

Women’s A3

It was a foggy wet Monday morning at Mt Osmond and despite very poor visibility the team teed off against the home side who were keen to get the match underway on their home ground.

The conditions were tough through the first few holes with the fog refusing to lift and heavy rain bringing a significant amount of casual water onto the fairways and greens.  After five holes, the game day official finally called off the match due to safety concerns.  We were not disappointed and happy to take the draw against the home side.

Next week, we play Blackwood at what we are hoping is a sunny and fine morning at Kooyonga.

Women’s Cleek 2

Women’s Cleek 2 had the bye.

Junior Division 2

This week we travelled South to play at Willunga against Tea Tree Gully. Due to a number of absences in our team, the Junior Div 2 team only had 4 players today. We were greeted with heavy showers prior to tee-off time, but the weather eventually cleared for the rest of the afternoon.

Gareth Thien playing at number 4, led us off again this week against Imogen Prider. It was a very close and long match, he was first to start and last to finish on the day. They were even on the 1st nine and it was up and down until the 16th. Gareth missed a few crucial putts that proved costly and he went 2-down.

Jayden McGrath was at 3 and had to give away 5 strokes against Eddie Raymond. He had a nervous start and the first 3 holes let him down, and whilst he fought hard, he was not able to mount a comeback and eventually lost 5 & 4.

It was a tough day for Holly O’Connor, who started off well but could not maintain her momentum and succumbed 8 & 7 to her opponent Ethan Simpson.

Playing at 1 was Jayneil Rudrappagari who played for Div 2 this weekend. A seasoned junior player for Glenelg, Jay proved too strong for his opponent James Kromwyk. Jay raced to an early lead and his consistent play secured our only win for today, at 8 & 6.

Despite a 3-1 loss, invaluable experience and learning were gained by our team today. I am very proud of the team, who did their best and are continuing their journey of development. We are back next week at Royal Adelaide.
