Bonnar Win Through to the Final

Bonnar Win Through to the Final

Semi-Final, 7 July

The Glenelg Bonnar boys continued their strong form to record a convincing win over Kooyonga in their Semi Final and will now take on a strong Grange team next week in the Bonnar Cup Final.

In the Finals, once a team has 4 wins the contest is over and any unfinished games are recorded as a half.

As it turned out Glenelg got off to a strong start in the early games and this proved pivotal in the final result.

After 9 holes in our contest Glenelg were ahead in 5 games, square in 1 game and down in just one match.

Henry Duregon at No. 7 again got off to a good start to be 2 up after 4 and then 4 up after 11 and maintained that advantage to win 4 & 2.

Ben Magi at No. 6 recovered from a slow start – after being 2 down after 2, he won 5 of the next 6 holes to be 3 up after 8 – he then lost a couple of holes but got back to 3 up playing the 15th where he played a magnificent shot in to the green to 6 feet and closed the match out with his birdie putt to win 4 & 3.

At No.5 Simon Gallie was super consistent all day – 2 up after 4, he turned 3up and maintained that lead to win 3 & 2.

These 3 early wins had us so close to winning the contest – just needing one more win to close it out.

Will Starkey at No.4 was having a tight match and turned all square – he then shot out to a 2 up lead after 14 but his opponent continued to play solid golf and Will was 1up playing the last but lost the hole to a birdie for a halved result.

About the same time David Hiern at No.3 was 3 up playing the 16th and won that hole for a 4 & 2 win – that gave us the 4 wins required to win the contest.

So, the remaining 2 matches were declared halves and the boys rushed off to see the finish of the Simpson Cup Semi-final.

In those other 2 games, Anthony Olsen at No.2 was having a really tight game – he was either 1 up or square for much of the day – their game being all square after 15 when the contest was decided.

Michael Munn at No. 1 had another gigantic battle with Geoff Brennan from Kooyonga. Both boys played some super golf and it was only a couple of putts here and there that made the difference. Geoff held the advantage for most of the day being 3 up at the turn and held that advantage after the 14th when the contest was determined.

Thanks to all the caddies and the handful of club members for their support and encouragement to the team.

We have now qualified for the Bonnar Cup Final next week at The Vines and will play a very strong Grange side from 10.15am.
