Simpson Cup Round 5 Report

Simpson Cup Report

Round 5, 16 June

The Glenelg Simpson cup team travelled to Mt Compass Golf Club with the course presented in great condition considering more than 70mm of rain fell during the week.

Our opponent Royal Adelaide as we anticipated would be a tough team to overcome and they did not disappoint. All of the Royal team had a determined attitude and it took some steely resolve for our boys to get a hard fought win.

Playing at no 7 David Hiern had a tough day with his match being virtually even until his opponent gained the upper hand to get out to a 3 hole advantage after 15 holes and eventually winning 3/2.

Jackson Kalz at no6 continued his good form since returning from college in the USA winning his match 4/3. After an even start Jackson got out to a 3 hole advantage after 8 holes and although losing the 10th regained his composure to close out his match winning 4/3.

Josh Hayes at no5 had a tough battle with the biggest advantage being 2up for Josh after 11 holes. Playing against a very determined opponent Josh fell back to be square after 16 holes and this remained the score after 18 holes with Josh having a hard fought halved match.

Jack Tanner at no4  also had a tough game with the biggest advantage for Jack being 2up after 15 holes. After losing the 16th hole then halving the 17th hole, to go down the 18th 1up, Jack was a must win match for us. With his opponent safely on the par 4 18th green for 2, Jack hit his second shot over the back of the green with a very tough 3rd shot. After unluckily pitching off the front of the green and with his opponent putting down to less than a metre Jack put his 4th shot around 3 – 4 meters above the hole and with a very slick down hill putt. After calmly holing his putt Jack watched on anticipating his opponent would hole his putt for 4 and gain a half. Fortunately for us he missed and this was pivotal in the team winning.

Ben Layton playing at no3 had a day out with an outstanding 7/6 win and continued his fantastic pennant form. Getting off to a fast start being 3up after 5 holes Ben extended his lead to be 6up after 9 holes also being 7 under the card. This was fantastic golf to watch with Ben having an outstanding win.

Sam Earl our no2 player was another of the team having a tough day. After being 3 down after 5 holes Sam fought back to be even after 9. After being 1up after 14 holes Sam then lost the 15 hole to go back to square. With the match remaining square until the 18th and with us having 3 wins 2 losses and a half already decided this match was essential for the team to win. Fortunately Sam calmly parred the last to win the hole and the match and gain the team win.

Jack Buchanan at no1 had his toughest match of the season against state team mate Billy Cawthorne. With the biggest margin in the match over the first nine holes being Jack leading 2up, Cawthorne gained the advantage on the back nine with some great golf to eventually defeat Jack 3/2.

This was a very hard fought 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 win by our boys and almost certainly assures us of a top two spot for the finals in our quest for a 4th successive cup win. As throughout the season the team is taking nothing for granted with a week by week attitude.

Good luck to Jack Buchanan who is travelling to Malaysia for 2 tournaments over the next 2 weeks. We feel sure he will represent Glenelg and S.A. Proudly.
