Simpson Cup Win at the Grange

Simpson Cup Win at the Grange

Round 2, 19th May 2019

The Glenelg Simpson Cup team playing at The Grange Golf Club had a hard and well earned second round win over a determined Vines of Reynella opponent.

Playing from the 10th hole first with just constant on and off rain and the threat of some lightning and with the match being very tight after the first nine holes our boys kept their cool and gained the upper hand to eventually win 5-1/2 matches to 1-1/2.

David Hiern Our first player out at no7 was off to a slow start being 2 down after 3 holes. He fought back to be 1 down after 8 holes then back to square after 14. Unfortunately David fell back to be 2 down after 16 and after winning the 17th hole to get back to 1 down could not close the gap at the 18th to lose 1 down.

Michael Munn at no6 continued on his winning way with a solid 4/3 win. Getting off to a quick start being 3up after 3 holes Michael let his opponent back into the match to only be 1 up after 8. He then put his foot down winning the next 4 holes to be 5 up after 12 eventually closing out his match 4/3.

Jack Tanner playing no5 continued his great form winning his match 4/2. Jack was also off to a fast start being 2up after 3 holes and kept this lead until he won the 13th to be 3 up. Jack eventually won his match 4/2 with a great long fairway bunker shot on the 16th hole to give him a birdie putt and well deserved win.

Team captain Josh Hayes again was ice cool in his match where pressure seem to bring out the best in him. After gaining a 1 hole advantage after 3 the score remained the same until the 12th where Josh put his stamp on the game winning a quick 3 holes to finish his match 4/3 up.

Ben Layton at no3 also continued his very good form winning his match 4/3. After being 2up after 6 holes then 4up after 9 Ben let his opponent back into the match being only 2up after 12 holes. Being determined not to let his advantage slip Ben won two of the next 3 holes to eventually win 4/3.

Sam Earl at no2 had to grind out a win against a tough Vines opponent. After gaining a 2 hole advantage after 8 holes then losing the 9th hole with a very errant tee shot going out of bounds, Sam regained his composure to win three of the next 6 holes eventually winning 4/2.

Jack Buchanan at no1 had a tough day but showed his class with a hard fought squared match against a tough opponent. After falling 2 behind early in the match Jack fought back to be square after 10 holes. Jack then fell back to be 1 down after 14, after winning the 15th hole Jack then lost the 16th to again be 1 hole behind.  With a great birdie Jack then won the 17th to get back to square. Both Jack and his Vines opponent then parred the 18th hole to have a well deserved half.

This was a tough game for our boys in trying conditions and to see them grind out a hard fought strong win will see us in good position for the remainder of the season.

Again thanks to all caddies and supporters for coming out and supporting our boys.
