Buchanan, Kuys and Tanner claim pennant honours

Jack Buchanan, Shakira Kuys and Jack Tanner have claimed this year’s Pennant Player of the Year awards, presented at the closing Pennant Dinner held at the Club on Sunday night.

Jack BuchananJack Buchanan won his first Men’s Pennant Player of the Year Award after going undefeated during the 2018 season winning all five of his games in middle order of Simpson Cup.  Unfortunately Jack was unable to attend the Pennant Dinner as he was in the US with Golf Australia at their annual High Performance Camp in Texas and with Golf SA playing in the IMG World Junior Championship where he finished T40.  It has been a great 12 months for Jack who was crowned Club Champion, won the 15 & Under National Championship and was named in the South Australian Men’s State Team.

The 2018 Most Outstanding Achievement Award was awarded to Simon Gallie.  In his first year of pennant for Glenelg, Simon’s commitment and golfing ability were unquestionable.  Starting the season at Number 5 in Bonnar, Simon played solid golf throughout the year to find himself playing the final game of the minor rounds at Number 7 in Simpson Cup.  With a player coming back into the Simpson Cup set up for the final, Simon was unlucky to miss out on a start but still supported the team in a caddying capacity.

Our 2018 Women’s Pennant Player of the year was Shakira Kuys.  Shakira went through the minor rounds undefeated playing in her first season in the Sanderson Cup team, unfortunately Shakira’s only loss came in the final, a tight match against Grange at Grange.  It was great to see Shakira grasp her opportunity to play at the highest Club level with both hands, she certainly showed maturity beyond her years.

Another junior, and our youngest ever Club Champion, Jack Tanner, won the Bob McLuckie Trophy as junior pennant player of the year.  As with Jack Buchanan, Jack Tanner also went undefeated in his five matches in Simpson Cup before heading the the US with Golf Australia and Golf SA.

Bec Hughes was awarded the Women’s Team Player of the Year award after another successful season.  Bec was the perfect anchor for the Pike Cup team winning all her games except her match against Reo Jenner from Mid North which she halved after a promotion up the order to Number 2.  Bec also won her match in the Pike Cup final to help her team win back-to-back titles.

Congratulations to our award winners and all players involved in our Pennant program on another great season.
