Glenelg Seniors sneak into Semi Finals

Report by Wayne Humphries
Team Manager

Glenelg’s Senior Pennant team have qualified for a Semi Final match against a strong Tea Tree Gully side on Monday, 13th November at Kooyonga.  After a season of highs and lows and challenges with player availability, the Glenelg Senior Pennant team jumped from fourth to second after the last minor round contest as a ‘shock’ finals competitor.

With that last round to be played at Blackwood it was highly unlikely that Glenelg would make the Finals. However, results went our way, Blackwood lost at home to Mt. Osmond and the top team Thaxted Park lost 6 – 1 to The Vines, this brought Glenelg level with The Vines and Thaxted Park but our 5 – 2 win against Victor Harbor gave us half an individual game advantage over Thaxted Park.  If we’d had any result worse than the 5 – 2 victory we would have finished in 3rd place and miss the finals.

So, every game against Victor Harbor was crucial.  None more so than David Chantrell’s game, he recovered from 6 down after 8 holes to win 1 up in a remarkable turnaround. David has had a sensational season, winning all 5 of his games to date.

At the top order, John Keogh and Grant Edwards both had hard fought halves.  Again, if either of these games were lost, we would not have made the finals, it was that tight!

Earlier, Kenton Inns, Wayne Humphries and Sandy Small won their matches whilst Doug Clark tried valiantly but could not match his opponent.

Other team members through the season have been Greg Kendall, Steve Weeks, Mike Dobson, Jim Rawson, Graham Stone, Denis Prider and Graham Fear.

Thanks to all the players for their commitment to the task and for representing the Club in such good spirit through the season so far.
