Juniors go down in tight Sharp Cup final

Glenelg's Sharp Cup Junior Pennant Team

Report by Sam Raschella (Assistant Manager)

Glenelg’s juniors travelled to play Kooyonga at their home track in the final on Sunday.  If that was not enough to deal with, try adding cold, wet conditions and three-club winds. Regardless, it was great to see the boys happy to be out competing for the title and embracing every element that was thrown at them.

Once again, Austin Baker lead the team out. After playing and winning his first pennant match last week (which helped us make the final), Austin unfortunately could not get the job done again, losing on the 15th hole, but still a great experience and it will only make him hungrier to keep improving.

Jacob Rillotta was a rock at number 2 this week. He lead from the beginning and continued to build his lead to win 6&4. The way he carried himself was commended by many supporters and he should be very proud of himself for that.

Marcus Kuys at number 1 found him himself 6 down at the turn. He showed some heart, battling to take the match down the 15th hole. But, his opponent was too good, holing the important putts early to keep Marcus out of the contest.  Marcus has played an influential role in getting the team to final so he should hold his head high for that.

So, with the score 2-1 in favour of Kooyonga, we still had hope with our Buchannan brothers still out at battle.

Jack Buchannan, at 3, showed off with some quality golf and looked home. His opponent capitalised on some of Jack’s mistakes on the 13th and 14th holes, which helped push the match to the 18th, but Jack pulled through holding his nerve to win 1 up. A great effort.

Aaron Buchanan, at number 4, showed a calm head to deal with the elements, battling all day with his opponent in a match that could have gone either way.  However, needing a win on the last to force extra holes, it was not to be.  Aaron is maturing fast and it was great to see him handle his defeat so well.

A narrow, painful loss for the lads in the final. But despite dealing with missing players for various reasons throughout the season, the boys should all be so proud to have made it in the first place.
