Total Funding
$6.5million with a contribution of $2.35million from the Australian Government, $2.35million from the South Australian Government and $1.8million from Glenelg, Royal Adelaide and Grange Golf Club's.
About the Project
The project will demonstrate the value of water re-use and stormwater recycling through the construction of man-made wetlands. The wetlands will act as filters for urban and polluted stormwater that would otherwise run into the St Vincent Gulf. Stormwater will be diverted to wetlands that will be developed at the Grange, Royal Adelaide and Glenelg golf clubs. This pre-treated water from the wetlands will then be pumped, through bores, back into the underground water supplies beneath Adelaide for use as needed.
Project Benefits
The Metropolitan ASR Project will:
- Save 1000 megalitres of water a year by using stormwater to replace water drawn from underground water supplies beneath the city
- Reduce the discharge of nutrients by diverting stormwater that would otherwise run into the St Vincent Gulf
- Improve the condition of beaches around outfall areas
- Decrease the salinity of underground water supplies by "refreshing" with filtered stormwater
- Provide certainty for irrigation of three internationally-rated and important golf course and
- Increase biodiversity.
About the Australian Government Water Fund
The Australian Government Water Fund is a $2billion investment in water solutions for current and future generations. The Fund is a major investment by the Australian Government in water infrastructure, improved water management, and better practices in the stewardship of Australia's scarce water resources. It will create opportunities for industries, investment and jobs while at the same time protect and restore our environment.
The Fund comprises three programs;
- The $1.6billion Water Smart Australia program
- The $200million Raising Nation Water Standards program and
- The $200million Community Water Grants program.
